I discovered that the problem is that my flash does not work so the camera slows the shutter to let the light in. It does not come up automatically like it should. Could you tell me how I might fix this?

You need to be a little more specific, as I own a XTi and have no problems with mine.

Read the manual or spot in the place you bought it from or give them a call, I wish I could have been more helpful.

Read your Owner's Manual. It should explain all the functions.

If you have the camera in "A" (Aperture Preferred) mode and you're trying to use a small f-stop (say f11) in low light then the camera will select a shutter speed appropriate to give correct exposure - and it will be very slow. If this is the situation, change the f-stop to f4 and watch the shutter speed increase.
