Was property tax used initially in the U.S or was it started later? Are there more equitable alternatives than taxing a person's home?

I believe that property taxes have been around since people have been able to own property. And yeah, there's a more equitable alternative than taxing a person's home, taxing a person's income, but no one wants to see higher income taxes, if it means doing away with property tax.

Property taxes go back over 1,000 years. They have existed in the US since before we were an independent nation.

An income tax is far more preferable to property taxes as it's directly linked to your ability to pay. Many elderly property owners on fixed incomes are forced to sell due to real estate taxes unrelated to their ability to pay.
