Go to a reputable music store and buy a Hal Leonard's Guitar Method #1 for beginners.
Inside are instructions how to tune, hold, and play the guitar with chords and basic music theory. Read and apply the principles slowly and carefully, ever mindful that your fingertips must move beyond the sore and tender time to when they build calluses.
If you can stay with it until after your calluses form you will then be on your way to guitar playing.

You must realize that there are basically three levels of learning: Hobbyist, working musician and guitarist. Can you learn to play popular songs to entertain yourself and friends? Yes. Can you learn enough to earn money doing it? Perhaps. Will it make you a Guitar virtuoso? NO!
There are plenty of DVD's available to teach you the basics at your own pace. There are plenty of DVD's to teach popular songs. There is probably more instruction available for the guitar than any other instrument.
This will make you able to enjoy playing but if your goal is to master the instrument or understand advanced music theory, you require actual professional instruction.
Go for it!

You absolutely can. You should get a book or a DVD that can guide you through learning the guitar.
If you ever want to learn advanced techniques you might need to hire a teacher to help you, but you can think about that later on down the road after you have taught yourself the basics.
Have fun!

Yes. Go look for Tablature Books from a favorite band. You don't have to know how to read music to read tablature. It explains it all. That's the best way, oh and practice practice practice
