To the previous respondent, she probably means the shackles that connect the rear of the leaf spring to the frame allowing it to move. The shackles themselves don't wear out, it's the rubber bushing in the "eye" of the furthest rear leaf. I don't know the price of parts, but you can get bushings for '50s and '60s Studebakers for $25 although that doesn't mean Ford doesn't charge a fortune. They aren't that hard to replace when you have a cutting torch handy to remove the old one.

Who says you need new "shackles"? A mechanic at an authorized Ford dealership or some unshaven guy in greasy coveralls working out of an old gas station? The bushing being worn out doesn't constitute an unsafe condition...it may rattle or make a noise when going over bumps but there's a very strong bolt holding everything together.

If you wonder about the actual condition of the bushing, save some money first and look under the rear bumper and you'll see the long, flat, narrow leaf springs that connect the axle to the frame of the truck. Between the frame and spring there will be two narrow strips of metal, the shackles, one on each side of the spring. On the spring end will be a big bolt that goes through both shackles and the spring and on the frame end another bolt through the frame. If you look behind the shackle closely, you should be able to see rubber between the inside of the spring's eye (the loop on the end of it) and the bolt. If the bushing is in need or replacment, the rubber will be gone or be frayed and torn up. The reason I mention this is because usually the bushings last forever and shackles don't wear out. If the shackles you supposedly need aren't the ones I've described, someone can't identify parts correctly and I'd definately go get a second opinion.

The shackles for the front are about $21 each and rears are $13 each. I would estimate an hour per side for a professional mechanic to do it.

unless the're damaged ,you don't need them, you replace the bushing, that's what gets worn out.
