Bokeh is the result of a shallow DoF, it's a Japanese term for the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of a photographic image. A shallow depth of field allows for this quality.

"Bokeh," in my understanding, is basically what we called "shallow DOF" when I first got started in photography some 35 years ago. Some lenses do it better than others, and I guess calling the effect "bokeh" sounds a bit sexier that saying, "the lens has good shallow depth of field."

The term "bokeh" is used to describe the out of focus background that results from using a large aperture. A lens is considered to have "good bokeh" if the out of focus highlights are creamy and indistinct. If you google Minolta or Nikon or Canon f1.2 lenses you'll find examples.
Depth of Field (DOF) is defined as that area in front of and behind your subject that is in acceptable focus. It lessens as the focal length increases and the f-stop gets wider. Here are a few examples.
135mm, focused on subject 8' away:
f2.8 DOF is from 7'-11" to 8'-1"
f4 DOF is from 7'-10" to 8 -1"
f8 DOF is from 7'-9" to 8'-3"
85mm, focused on subject 8' away:
f2.8 DOF is from 7'- 9" to 8'- 3"
f4 DOF is from 7'-8" to 8'-4"
f8 DOF is from 7'-4" to 8'-8"
24mm, focused on subject 6' away:
f2.8 DOF is from 4'-9" to 8'-2"
f4 DOF is from 4'-4" to 9'-8"
f8 DOF is from 3'-5" to 26'-9"
16mm, focused on subject 6' away:
f2.8 DOF is from 3'-9" to 15'-8"
f4 DOF is from 3'-3" to 50'-8"
f8 DOF is from 2'-4" to infinity
As you can readily see, focusing with the longer lenses, especially at larger apertures, becomes very critical.
