interestingly enough, it was the position favored by protestant missionaries....makes sense I guess, I mean it doesn't surprize me that these guys had a boring sex life.

There is a common belief that the term "missionary position" arose in response to teachings by Christian missionaries that this sex position was the only "proper" way to engage in sexual intercourse. This is in fact a myth. The reality is that the term probably originated some time between 1945 and 1965 through a confluence of (apparently honest) misunderstandings and misinterpretations of historical documents

I believe it had something to do with the church. I think it was the only position that was accepted by the church. I do know that the US military can charge a service person with sodomy if they want if caught doing anything else besides the missionary position under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)

It was decided by missionaries to third-world countries that this was the only permissible position. All others were called sinful and non-human, since animals (except certain breeds of monkeys) never use the face-to-face position.

I don't remember where but I have read, that Catholic
Missionary Priest, who went to Africa, to convert the
natives into Christanity, were caught having sex in this
position and hence the term missionary. In fact it has
become synonymous with sex from front side. Apparently
natives were far superior as far as positioning were
concerned.

missionaries from Rome gave this as the only Christian way to have intercourse. the church made the decree that other positions were bestial and pagan, and they held up this as the way God intended couples to have sex.
