Caramel Apple Turnover

Prepare a delicious apple turnover by baking a cinnamon sugar pastry crust filled with apple chunks smothered with caramel apple dip and chopped nuts. A turnover is a pastry-dough circle or square that is covered with a sweet or savory filling, and then folded in half to create a pastry in the shape of a triangle or semicircle. The edges are pinched or crimped to prevent the filling from leaking.

Vents allow the steam to escape. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or yogurt.

Preparation time: About 15 minutes.

Equipment you’ll need: Pastry board, rolling pin, small mixing bowl, measuring spoons, baking sheet, utility spoon, liquid measuring cup, pastry brush, kitchen fork, cooling rack, pizza cutter, serving spatula and plates.

Safety: Use dry potholders to place turnover into oven and remove. Allow the turnover to set a few minutes before serving.

Recipe:

1 Ready-to-Bake Crust for a 9-inch pie
2 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 large Golden Delicious apple
1/3 cup Caramel Apple Dip plus 2 tablespoons
1 4-ounce package pecan chips, divided

1. Preheat oven to 375-degrees. Coat baking sheet with a spray of canola oil.
2. In a small bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon. Reserve 1 tablespoon.
3. Roll sugar mixture into crust. Fold into quarters and unfold on baking sheet.
4. Cut apple into sections with corer/slicer. Cut each slice into 3 pieces.
5. Spoon apples onto half of pastry crust. Sprinkle flour over and then pour over
1/3 cup caramel dip and sprinkle on half of pecan chips.
6. Brush edges of crust with cold water and seal with fork tines. Sprinkle
remaining sugar mixture over.
7. Bake for 30 minutes or until pastry is light golden brown and apples are cooked.
8. Place baking sheet on wire rack to cool. Drizzle lightly with remaining 2
tablespoons caramel dip and pecan chips.

Yield 3-4 servings.
