The question is: Is salt really "expire" after a period of time? Or the expiry date on box is only an act for manufacturer to include because all consumable items need an exipiry date?
Pls advice! Thanks!

Well it all depends on how was the salt stored..!
If stored in a dry area, it shall be fine because the only thing salt is under harm from is moisture. If there is moisture in it, it could have harm full microbes.
So the best way to check that the salt is OK after passing of expiry date is to :
01. THERE SHOULD BE NO LUMPS IN SALT.
02. THE SALT SHOULD BE FREE FLOWING. ( for this, lift some salt in your palm and drop it slowly as is done to check direction of air in golf course!!, it should not fall as lumps)

If it passes the above 2 tests, DON'T worry IT IS FINE!!

Well technically after the expiry date it is expired, however I think it is a rule that all foods can be safely consumed up to a week or 2 after the supposed expiry date.

I'd say it would be ok to eat, as long as the expiry date wasn't from August of 2006 :p

Before ice boxes and refrigeration, salt was used as a preservative for meats, butter, etc. You could pack pork in a barrel of salt and it would last indefinitely. Hides were preserved with salt to keep them from rotting.

So no worries - salt absolutely does not go bad. Worst case scenario is that the salt may not be quite as "fresh" as it used to be - it might have picked up some slight taste from things it was stored near. But if it was sealed, probably not. Use it with no fear!

Salt- NaCl also known as common salt , is pretty safe to consume as long as it has been stored in a water free environment.
If u caught "cooks tour", where he went to the French laundry(bloody expensive, "super-class" restaurant), he was treated to 200million year old salt as a condiment to one of his dishes. So looking at the situation from that aspect. your pretty darn safe eating salt a few years past expiry date.

I wouldn't worry about that date on the box. I have used sea salt that was several years old. I have made home-made pretzels with sea salt. You should try making those. There is a recipe at Source site.

I am so absolutely astounded that sea salt would have an expiry date at all!!!! I cant imagine that it could ever go out of date. Salt is a form of crystal. Isn't it? I don't see how salt could ever go off. My amethyst necklace never did ....lol..... That's Not funny.....

It's safe, but it may taste a little old, or stale, or may have caked with humidity. The " expiration " date is to ensure freshness , but sea salt won't " go bad" - I use it instead of table salt and never have any problems .

Salt is commonly used as a preservative because it last so long!

I would say that is almost certainly OK to eat, but if you are doubt, try a tiny bit on your tongue to find out.
