Teacher is a source of knowledge. When we are in school/colleges, it is the teacher who teaches us about manners, discipline, language, arts, science, psychology, society culture, earth, space, universe...etc. etc.
We never worshipped them... we learnt from them and repsected them....

Spiritual Gurus, explaining us the Holy Books, teaching us art of living, ways of enlightenment, guiding us to understand God.. are being worshipped (It's my personal observation).

Do you think worshipping them is important or absorbing the knowledge given by them (if one has complete faith in it) and giving due respect to them is the correct way?

A guru is one who leads you to God and for that he is worshipped. There aren't too many gurus in the world these days, believe me. A true guru only speaks of God and is a representative of God. He speaks of God virtually 24 hours a day, 7 days a week but speaks only from an authorised scriptures and no where else. One easy way to tell whether one is a bona fide Guru is to see if he/she is puffed up when he acquires many folowers. A true Guru is not as he has full controll of his senses and his ego.

Only a true guru is worthy of worship but a true Guru would never like to be worshipped. So this is one way in which you can find out whether the Guru in whose refuge you are willing to go is really a wise teacher or is afflicted by the false ego of being all knowing. The true wise guru would never ever fall into such worldly traps, and only that guru who knows his way to his own spiritual emancipation can show his disciples the true path.

The Spiritual Guru is said to be representative of the Lord. He is the person who shws the right path to become Godly to go to the God. It is the duty of disciple to worship Guru as greatfulness for such things. When Guru is kept satisfied, the God becomes satisfied. (Ofcourse, Guru should be pious, well versed in all moral and ethical principles, indifferent regarding money matters and keeps proper distance from femal disciples with reverence and respect.)

Guru doesn't mean the science or arts teacher in the school. Guru also doesn't mean the maths or the economics teacher of the college.

Guru means one who removes darkness and enlightens our hearts and minds. Guru is the second name of God. He is to be worshipped with humbleness.

But who is that Guru, should be our next question?

Yes, you can worship them if you need but be careful, you shall not be blind to believe them all teaching by no doubt and no investigate that what is good for you and another one just because they are your teacher.
So you can make it balance between worshiping and doubtfulness. worshiping will make you have will power to learn from them and doubtfulness will make sure that what you learn is the truth and good for all mankind.

There has only been one man worthy of worship. He lead a sinless life. How do your Gurus stack up to that?

>Etymology of GURU is :--Ru=intellectual darkneess---Gu=one who takes you to enlightenment.
> According to Vedic Religion(the so called "Hinduism")Maatru Devo Bhava=My biological/foster mother is my first GOD ,whom I can feel and see--Pitru Devo Bhava=My biological/Foster father, second GOD--ACHARYA Devo Bhava=My Teacher(Religious/Science/Maths/English/etc) is the Third God.--the REAL G-O-D=God is only fourth in the order.
> "Guru Brahma,Guru Vishnu,Guru Devo Maheswaraha-Guru Saakshaath Para Prahmam Thasmai sri Gurave Namaha=God is in the forms of Creator,Protector and Supreme Commander--GURU (Teacher) is above all the 3,(GOD) because I am able to see him, hear him and he removes my intellectual darkness-so my salutations to that GURU.
> Imkaara ,Hreemkaara,Rahasya Yuktha----Sreemkaara Gudhartha mahaa Vibhudhyam---Omkaara Marma Prathi Paadheenibyamm--namo namastu Guru Paadukaabyaam= The translation requires elaborate interpretations of the Bheejaaksharams(Seed letters-"Im"--"Hreem"---"OM" "Kleem" etc-so i do not elaborate-last sentence says TWO salutations to that GURU.--We can GOOOOOOOO on write about GURU

Offering respect to teacher manifested differently in different cultures and different times.

Important was offering respect and not the ways in which it was offered.
