It all depends how well a guard is trained and what kind of company he works for. In my experience with Burns International Security Services and Effective Security Systems, Inc. (now called SpectaGuard), most contracted security guards really are little more than warm bodies in polyester uniforms with low pay, low or no benefits, a low IQ, social problems, and minimal training at best. I've rarely ever seen a guard exhibiting the "rent-a-cop" stereotype, though I've caught several sleeping on the job or being rude to clients/coworkers and fired some for that. Usually a problem guard is some guy who thinks his job is to simply run around a building and hit all the keys and is either too lazy or incompetent to properly handle a security/safety incident. The clients who purchase services from such outside security contracting companies typically only look for the lowest bidder and don't do a good job looking into their hiring and management practices. Companies that hire their own in-house security, though, tend to demand higher qualifications (i.e. prior police or military experience) and give their guards better pay and benefits so they usually wind up with a better and more loyal worker.

I've been a sworn college Police Officer for 27 years, and I get the same thing. We're not alone though. The cops get the same disrespect from people, honest. And that disrespect doesn't just come from the bad guys. You should see & hear how a number of the so called pillars of society talk down on them.....and over dumb stuff. They get a well deserved parking ticket because they were to cheap to cough up a quarter at a meter, and boy....that poor cop, who is probably married, has children, a mortgage, a car payment.....on and on, just earning a living like anybody else gets an undeserved earful. Get used to it, or change careers.

Well to tell you the truth, being a security officer is the one job title that requires little or no education at all. People in general tend to look down at others with little or no education, regardless of their ability to do the job. Sorry but that is just the stimta that goes along with the job. About 5 years ago, I decided to join security. It was really good decession on my part, I really do enjoy my job. I was a Campus Safety Officer for Occidental College in LA and now I work for the City of LA as Public Safety Officer. My advise, try to get some education and promote or go into another field.

i was always taught respect is earned not demanded, and as for cops, the only thing i ever see them do on a call is sit in their car for about ten minutes then go away, they never even get out of the car, guess that way they don`t have to file police report`s and another thing and i have a few friends that became cops, they like to wait and catch minor girls driving drunk(the girls will offer to do anything just to let them go even sex) pretty sick huh? and these guys are on a public payroll and screwing your under age kids, when i was in school the science teacher(also a sargent on the local police farce)got busted with his dick shoved up a 12yr old girl so she would get a passing grade. and you think these ******* deserve some respect? i grant that these are exceptions to the norm but give me a break theirs jokes about everyjob, sorry your feelings are getting hurt by all the jokes, but hey you`re getting paid right? i mean a cop can`t walk by a krispy kream, or dunkin donuts without a few giggles, so just take it in stride, people just want to tear someone else down to make themselves feel better now a days anyway maybe some are just jealous your in a position of trust while they have to bust their *** to earn their living

Security officers normally don't try and enforce the law. They are there to enforce the employer's policies. They are there to help deter crime only by their presence.
Some security officers are assigned to detain those that steal from the employer. Some of them are armed.
However, they are not law enforcement officers and will tell you that. Their job is to notify the proper authorities and then try to maintain security as well as detain the subject.
Lately, security has become a much more dangerous job than it used to.
A lot of retired cops work part time as a security officer.
It is an honorable profession.

I sympathize with you. The fat, old, drunk, asleep on the job, overzealous wannabe, are staples of bad movies and insipid TV programs.
My personal gripe are with many police officers who look down on security officers. Yet, often work security gigs for a little extra cash. There are a large number of former police and retired cops who work in the security industry. Hell, after I retired a few years ago, I did a stint as a "security consultant" for one of the major security firms.

i agree with you. some s/o's are wastes but most really enjoy their jobs and work hard.
i know several s/o's including my byfrnd who i wouldn't want to run from or steal from their locations.
spare me the lard butts or geezers who can't preform the job properly. (some do just sit around and yawn lol) but at least they are working. it's more than the people on unemployment are doing.
some sec co's are jokes too, low pay rates, poorly run, shabby supervisors. others are spot on with pay, employees, contracts etc
i agree they shouldn't ALL be made fun of. but some are worth some jabs lol
i'm sorry but seeing a last 60s or 70s guard sitting at a grocery store with a uniform on is worth ribbing for at least the fact you know he can't catch you if you steal and run lol
sorry had to

you never have been and never will be anything close to a cop. the only help you can give them is to call and say you saw something. you have no police powers and no powers of arrest.you do work a hard job but you are still no more than what i stated. retired texas deputy sheriff
