Why people are afraid of the dentist?
First, it's the dreaded explorer (the tool of pain) they scratch around in your mouth; the noise inside your head is like fingernails going down a chalkboard! Once he finds the most painfull spot, he will invariably concentrate his attentions in that area. When you scream in agony he'll say "Oh does that hurt; let me try that again" He will say something like "I'm afraid we're going to have to drill" (for some mysterious reason worded as if he actually doesn't enjoy drilling). The next part is really fun; the syringe (which they seem to go out of their way to make as big and scary as possible). Because of the gock they put on your gums beforehand the injection isn't really painful, but you can feel the needle slowly penetrating deeper and deeper into your flesh. Then he starts drilling (sometimes the tooth in question is numb; sometimes not). It will sound sort of like there is a small auto repair shop in your mouth. Once the excavation is complete, he will fill it in with a tool I refer to as the tooth-packer. When he is ramming the stuff in the hole it squeeks against your tooth like when you eat dill pickles. When he's doing this, its easy to tell if he makes a mistake, because he'll be urgently telling the nurse "I need suction!"; "I need cotton rolls!" you'll be able the see and hear all the blood gurgling gurgling through the tube! Also he'll say "rinse".

Past experiences is the number one reason. A lot of people have memories of past painful experiences or previous dentists who were not very friendly. Nowadays, dentists are much more comforting. And they have a lot of new technology. I think people should take the time to find the perfect dentist for them, and one who truly cares about their oral health, cause a lot don't and do it for the money, but some are truly interested in your health. Finding the right one will usually make it a much better experience for both of you.

I'm not afraid of the dentist. I have a HUGE DENTIST PHOBIA. You have no idea!! It's the "they're in your face" fear. I break out in a sweat even walking to the surgery. Fortunately I have a dentist who understands my intense phobia and lets me suck on an anaethetising gas for 10 minutes before I even open my mouth. PS: I have a dental appointment in the morning, and feel sick about it already.

I personally am afraid because I have extremely sensitive teeth. And also the fact that they don't always want to use nitrous which helps more than one can describe.

It is not the dentist I am afraid of. It is the thought of having a little prick in my mouth that scares me!

the cost, movie dramas criticising the pain, the cost...
LOL it's really expensive (unless you have the golden fleece health insurance) but really, if you have a well educated DR, then there's really little pain at all.
