I would like to take the family away for an island holiday experience, which island would be most suitable for a family. My children are aged 4 and 6yrs old.

If you are up Cairns way - I suggest a day trip out to Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef. (there’s also a resort there)
A day of snorkelling, (kids can find nemo), sunbaking, take a ride in a glass-bottom boat if you don't want to get wet ... and eating - 3-4 different restaurants to chose from. Also have a swimming pool on the island.

If you are near Brisbane - there's Morton Island. A short 55 min boat trip out of Brisbane.
You can feed some wild dolphins at night!
http://www.tangalooma.com or http://www.dolphinwild.com.au or http://www.moreton-island.com There's heaps of activities to do, a range of different accommodation, a National Park, diving on artificial reefs, swimming pools, and HUGE sand dunes to surf down. I loved it there.

Note - If your kids have seen Scooby Doo (1) Alot of the movie was filmed on Morton Island.!

Fraser island the worls biggest sand island, it's not far from Hervey bay bout 4hrs north of Brisbane. i've never actually been to Fraser island but i did live in Hervey bay for a few years but my uncle used to drive the tour buses and said that it was really nice, a great place to relax. theres some really nice all day walk you can do, beautiful beaches, pools. i've seen pictures of dingo's wandering around on the beaches.
Hervey bay was whale watching cruises which are great.
there beaches are great for small children as there virtually no waves it's not too deep and it's crystal clear most of the time, both my kids loved it up there as it's a nice quite place (there 5 and 9) the people are friendly.
there's some useful information on the site below.
enjoy you holiday :)

Why not base yourself at Airlie Beach and take day trips out to some of the 70 odd islands of the Whitsundays.
Enjoy your holiday.

Hamilton. I stayed there and loved it. The service is good and there are so many beaches to relax on. Also very few cars and lots of swimming pools for a safer environment.
Adults can shop and there is a creche you can book kids into.

Whatever you do, don't go to Hope Island. It is crap. It is manmade and in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do.
