In terms of health - it seems to be okay. However, some recommend against it because a woman's hair changes a lot due to hormonal changes.

If you have a hair stylist you trust, explain your concerns to her/him & ask for advice. You might be able to have your hair trimmed in a way that works w/ your natural curls & is low maintenance.

as a salon and experienced stylist, I would have to a big no to this idea, firstly you will spending a lot of money on a perm
when your hormone levels are all over the place, and without doubt the perm would drop, as your hair may not be in the best postion, depending the stage of your pregnancy you are going to put yourself in an environment where there is some very very strong chemicals around you, the answer is you should wait till the baby is born, then treat yourself to a perm or whatever you will feel much better for it, and have something to look forward to, let me the first to congratulate you on the baby, but please please don't do this to your hair at this moment in time, of course no hairdresser would refuse to perm your hair as its a business however i prefer my clients to come back again, and have an interest in doing there hair to the best of my capabilities, honestly this is not a good idea wait till after the birth

It will probably be harder to maintain after its permed. I was born with straight hair, got it permed, got pregnant and my hair is now permanently curly. Getting preg changed my hair but ever since I got that one perm which was 10 years ago now my hair has never fully recovered. Not as shiny, lots of split ends all the time. I would not reccomend it. Especially to someone with already naturally curly hair. You will regret it in the long run.

If you have naturally curly hair why would you need to perm it?
And to answer your question, the reason they say not to perm or color your hair during pregnancy is because with all the hormones you don't know how your hair will react. I however did perm my hair during pregnancy and it was one of the best perms of my life. But I suppose everyone is different.

you are correct when you state that the chemicals don't enter your blood stream as the scalp will not let anything penetrate it (although dark colours when colouring are proven to be worse than bleach) but with perms there are very strong chemicals being used and you are in a closed environment breathing those fumes in and whatever you are breathing in IS going through your blood stream to the babys. i am a platinum blonde (by bleach and tone) and yet when i was pregnant i wouldn't touch my hair because your babys health is more important than vanity.

Nah! Its not a good idea! Your hormone levels can change the structure of your hair making it brittle. Having a perm would make it worse, causing the ends to break off. Don't do it!

actually you shouldnt dye or perm your hair while preg
i've been told your scalp can absorb the chemicals and you have to sit there breathing them while it is being done. i wouldn't!!! congrats on your upcoming arrival!!!
