Those Christians are often willfully ignorant. Faith in something does not make it true. That's the same ignorance that Christian apologists lambaste other belief structures for all the time.
For me, I had to be convinced God was real before I had any faith in him whatsoever. God is real to me, and therefore I have faith in him--not the other way around.

Of course, it means Santa Claus is real. Just because Santa comes in the form of parents does not mean that your parents are not real. God takes many forms to all people and to the various cultures, that's why we have so many religions all professing to have faith in God. You don't hear children arguing about which is the "real Santa." Children get the results and happiness and fulfillment that the meaning of Santa Claus suggests. That is what is suppose to be what the God concept is all about. Don't you think?

because God is more than just a made up fictional character. children are children and believe in most things you tell them at the age anyway. God is more than that. Christians believe that because they know in their heart that he is real, they have faith and hope in someone who they have never seen. It is relying on someone that isn't there but yet there.

Faith is belief in an unseen reality. Objective reality is not just physical. There is a seen world, and there is an unseen world. Reality in the seen world, everyone sees. Reality in the unseen world, only few see it. Yet it is objective reality.

What was the question you asked to get that response? "How do you know God is real if you can't see him".
They are saying that this is their belief and opinion, and yes, their life. So butt out, in a polite way! I can see you're point, as you cannot find any proof in your life as to the existence of God. Maybe there is no God is what you are thinking. Well, you don't have faith, so God does not exist to you.
Part of catholic faith is a belief in God's acceptance of our faith. That in our practices of following Gods way, our intentions and faith manifests rewards unto itself.
Imagine that theres's a God, I mean just pretend (like imagining Santa or something for yourself ok). Now if there is a God, well it seems as though he's left us to our own devices to a point. Religiously speaking there are many faiths, Catholic, Protestant, other Christians, born agains, Mormons, Jehova Witnesses, Russian Orthodox, Angelicans, Jews, Muslims (like Sunni's and Shiites), and on and on. So who's right? I mean if I don't follow the right book then I'm going to hell maybe? But, more importantly if there's a GOD then he can simply fix this easy and make it clearer as to which one is right.
But God does not do this! So our faith is important in our relgion in helping to guide us. I belive that there is no simple exact list or instruction manual that we can simply check off to find a path towards holiness. I belive that God is somewhat flexible in judging us. I mean if you made a list of what your person needed to do to be loved by you, and he or she did every single thing they might not earn your love because of other reasons. Because part of earning my love is in loving me in return and showing me honesty and respect.
In each of our own ways we've tried to find ways to show God our love in our own special way (keeping in mind our times, laws, and situations). So havining faith is what keeps our goal to becoming holy, to joing our great saviour, and to be part of a eternal kingdom. This is our way of keeping it real. This is our way of bringing his word and glory to live.

I have faith in God & Jesus because of experiences in my life etc.... It goes deeper than just being 'real to me'.
