I'd give them another couple days and then go out with them (in the daylight) and let them explore. If you're nervous about it, put them on leashes (get small dog harnesses for them) unless they come when called. Chances are good the first hour or two they won't venture very far. After that, they're on their cat-ly duties. (You do have them spayed/neutered, right?) I D on their collars?

To be on the safe side, cats need a month inside a new home to get acclimated. If they get less time, they may take off back to the old home territory.

In any case, you need to check your neighborhood for dangers that may not have been present at your old home:

- cat killing, cat chasing dogs
- coyotes, skunks, raccoons and other wildlife
- traffic patterns
- neighbors who do not like cats
- feral cats, neighborhood cats
- neighbors who put out rat bait or snail bait
- places they could get trapped in such as old pipes, fencing, etc.

If and when you do let them out, keep their litter boxes inside and feed and water them inside as well. That will keep them more attached to the new home.

While it is a good idea to take your cats on leash to survey a new place, please do not use dog harnesses for them. Use a cat walking jacket made just for cats. They are much safer and more comfortable for cats.

Personally, I would keep them inside. I have successfully adjusted outdoor cats to the indoor when I was a kid (my parents had let them out before) and they adapted just fine. It also will help, whether you keep them in or out, to put some Rescue Remedy in their water for two weeks to calm them down. They are readjusting, and that is a natural flower essense that can help reassure them. It is cheap and at places like Hi Health. Good luck!

Forever. I let my cat out once after I moved, in a bout 2 weeks, And unfortunately she was hit by a car. Killed.

Cats should not go outside to spread disease and get disease. I have 9 cats and all are indoor and have no problems with staying in.

Praise to those that have already said this - you should keep the cat inside FOREVER. Read this if you need further convincing:

PS: would you rather hear it crying to be let out or wonder if it's crying while its bleeding to death at the side of the road - wondering if you'll find it before it breathes its last breath?

FOREVER!

unless you want them to get hit by a car, tortured by a demented human, torn up by a fox, raccoon, or feral cat colony, or die a horrible death from feline leukemia. You're the cats parent, after all, so you should be a responsible one, right?

Get your cats fixed and vaccinated and keep them safe inside!

Put butter on their noses so that they lose the scent of the old house. When it wears off then they will reallize the new scent as being home.
