Do you think morals and religion are the same thing? That a person can't have good morals unless he/she is a follower of a certain religion?
I know there is no conclusive answer for this..I just want to listen to random different opinions and try to understand what are they based upon. Thank you.
(P.S. Please oh please don't refer to excripts from Holy books - I am seeking what you understand, not what you memorise.)

Important note after reading your very interesting answers:
What I mean by not caring about one's relgion includes one being a Jew, A muslim, A budisht, a pagan,or even an atheist. Please keep that in mind while answering. Saying that God doesn't care about one's religion as long as one reads the bible, believes in Jesus or Mohammed or Buddah as the saviour etc. is an oxymoron and an obvious contradiction.

Thank you all for your insight, your honesty, and for taking the time to answer this.

No! But good luck convincing the majority!

I believe there is no one religion that has all the answers! There are some very good people who are Atheist and they lead very good lives.

I believe that God can be many things and go by many names! Finding the life style for you is much like finding a shoe that fits you just right in a store. You will be able to walk in them but not everybody will be able to do the same

God cares about the religion because religion is the code of life. Source of all religions and scriptures are common i.e. God but people altered His religions and scriptures for worldly purposes.

The only people who will enter Paradise are those who believe in the Oneness of God. Any group of people who disbelieves or associates anything with God will not qualify for Heaven. This rule applies both for the Muslims and non-Muslims, including the Christians and Jews. How God will judge human beings at the end is up to Him, although Muslims believe that God's Judgment is The Most Fair, Most Just, and Most Righteous.

Allah (s.w.t.) says in the Quran in Surat al-Baqarah (2), verse (62):'' Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews, Christians or Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.'' From this verse and some other verses there is a clear evidence that people who are not Muslims or did not hear of Islam could still go to heaven if they met the criteria mentioned in the verse above.

Morality is more fundamental than God.

Belief in God does not grant morality. Disbelief in God does not eliminate it.

True morality is based on logic and empathy: the empathy to care how your actions affect the rest of the universe and the logic to figure out how they do so.

If God exists, he can either agree with morality or disagree with it. He cannot create or determine it.

If God's decisions are based on morality, then he will not condemn people to eternal hell for lacking faith in him. If he does condemn people to hell for that, then God is immoral.

When religious people say that God sends all non-believers to hell or that faith in Jesus grants eternal salvation, what they are really saying is that the deity they worship is immoral.

Even if such a God exists, he should not be worshiped by anyone.

Oh, absolutely not. In fact, morality and spirituality couldn't be less related. Morality came first, and religion was molded to fit morality.

Some say there are some universal morals, which is probably true. Overall, as a species, we can agree that some things are just wrong.

For example:
* Slurping up someone else's **** is wrong.
* Over all, anal sex, and by extension, all homosexual intercourse, is morally wrong.
* Vampirism (unless you're a very polite vampire) is frowned upon.

1. God (as we know him) doesn't exist, and yes - there is more than enough evidence to prove it

2. If he does exist, he's either A) a ******* idiot for only making roughly 30% of the population believe in him and sending the others to be tortured forever or B) Shaking his head in futility as to where he went wrong with Man. Man seems to be more concerned with the small details of religion, instead of the big message in all religions: "Live in peace and love one another". Instead of living by that one simple rule, Man decides to kill each other constantly because of the details, such as, "You call your God 'God' while we call ours 'Allah'".

I think if God were the slightest bit competant, he would let everyone who acted peacefully and lovingly into Heaven.

But don't forget, it's all completely untrue.

i dont think that it matters what religion you are i think it matters how you live your life.i dont believe that if you dont go to church you are going to burn in hell.may be wrong but....most of the people that i have met that go to church are people that i would not want standing next to me at the pearly gate.some people say they dont sin they do no wrong go to church come home grab a beer and go talk about the neighbor.well, that is not my cup of tea.if you are a christian or what ever you should not judge love each other try to live right i really dont care what people do as long as they are not hurting my family or any one else what business is it of mine?every church has its own belief everything you dont do is about going to hell, but when you do good for people or really try out of the goodness of your heart, people dont see that. so yes i do think people can have great moralsand not even go to church.

God is a fiction, but morals are quite real. Moral codes derive from evolution, which applies to societies as well as to species: a society which adheres to a sound moral code will survive preferably to one that does not.

Your actions are the most important thing according to God. You can follow any religion until you are blue in the face - God wants your heart not rituals and chants etc

I'm a Christian

I don't think God gives a flying poop about us. Why would the ultimate creator of the universe care what some tiny organisms on some little planet are doing, when God has the entire universe to oversee? Sort of like how we don't care about the bacteria crawling all over our skin. They're just so tiny, we just don't notice or care. We have much bigger things to worry about. I think God would be the same way when thinking about us. God has much bigger things to worry about, I would assume.

I think (If there is a god) that God would care more about what people do that is good and how they treat people, not what they worship and how much they go to church.
