It's not that there's that many more, it's just they're more open about it. There are many things that are socially acceptable now that we're looked down on 50 years ago. It's actually sad. The sad thing is that in a Christian stand point, God gave man the ability to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions about Him, even if the decision is to turn their backs on Him. God made it that way so that people would love him from choice and not by force. People like to preach the word but unfortunately they didn't follow what they were preaching. That's what I believe and it's what the Bible speaks of. Clearly, it's more acceptable now for people to speak their mind on their beliefs and that is great. The bad thing is that it causes more arguments and almost a hatred. So back to the point, it's just more acceptable to be open about your beliefs and not so much of numbers shifting. We all believe what we want and no two people will ever agree on everything.

It's hard to tell if it's increasing or if more people are willing to admit that they don't believe in God. Of course, it depends on how you define "atheist." Some people don't believe in God, but they are spiritual (such as Buddhists), others simply don't label themselves as atheists (preferring "humanist," "secularist," etc. or no label at all), and others are afraid to admit it because of family pressures.
According to the link below, Christianity has declined from 86% in 1990 to 77% 2001. In 1990, 8% of the American population claimed no religious affiliation; by 2001 it had risen to about 14%. Some of that percentage are atheists, others simply don't go to church or follow any particular religion but would call themselves "spiritual." It is also difficult to figure out just what it means to call oneself Christian, since many people describe themselves thus yet don't attend church; and many churches count only members that are baptized, and don't take those names off the rolls when the members leave or join another church (all the better to claim higher numbers, I suppose).

Bible says in the last days there will be an increase in ungodliness. Atheism is all about "I". Its not that the evidence of God is not there, (see romans chapter 1) its about the heart. Atheists don't want God to exist, if God exists they are accountable. Many atheists have had something really bad happen to them in their lives so they become bitter at God and then say there is no God. This is what the Bible says, "The fool has said in his heart, there is no God". Its not about the intellect or knowledge or faith, its about the heart.

I think that the real problem is with the churches and organized religion. Their methods no longer work. Check the rising memberships of other, non-traditional spiritual groups. Pagan and such.

Yes, i think it is because with all the horrible things happening in the world today people start to lose faith that Allah/God is there. They feel that he has abandoned them. Also there is a lot of scientific research that tests their faith. Evidence that says religion is a false story.

I don't believe it is. But there are a lot of people who take religion with a grain of salt, even if they go to church on sunday.

I don't know if it's increased or if it's just more out in the open, I don't suspect the number fluctuates greatly or is going to really get much higher.
