It meows a lot, and has been showing up for the past couple of nights.
It has a collar, but i don't see any lost cat signs anywhere.

Does that cat look thin and hungry, or like it's being fed and groomed. The tail thing could be- if it's male, it might be spraying bushes and whatnot to mark it's territory, and if it's female and has tail and rump up, it's probably in heat, and they do yowl. Either way, it might be there because there is a desirable cat in the area, especially if they are not fixed. I have found a lot of people give up when their cat disappears and just assume they will not see it again. I always post found posters around town when a stranger comes my way, and more than once I have found the owner. Good luck.

Raised tail can mean it's happy to see you or it is being cautious around you, it's probably meowing because it's lost or even could be calling for a mate, most likely calling for a mate. I agree you should call an animal shelter because there are too many stray cats on the streets these days, it could get hit by a car if you don't or end up being poisoned by someone like a few of these sick and twisted individuals that have written idiotic advice about your question like 'run it over' and 'put glue down' and 'get a dog' don't listen to them, this is a great site but as usual these sadistic air stealing twats have got to ruin it for good decent people who want to ask advice and be given HELPFUL advice. You could feed it too, as long as he knows not to come inside you should be fine, have you tried allergy medications? there are some good ones on the market these days, up to you. If it is a female however bear in mind that your problem of one stray cat in your yard could turn into lots of little problems very soon, so I would say phone your local rescue place, they will know what to do.

Check to see if any of your garbage cans are opened, check to see if there is any food or other cats around your house. When a cat raises there tail it's for balance and usually there curious about something. And the meowing they can be in heat! hungry or hurt. You should take a picture of the cat and put signs up over your neighborhood. Or go down your block and see if it's any ones. Whatever you do don't feed the cat, then the cat will be in your yard all day and night and mabe try to get into your house.

Have you read the collar? Maybe the owners are listed on it or a vet's number you could call??
If you feed it, it will keep coming back. So, before you give it food or water or attention, decide whether or not you want to adopt a cat.
You could also consider putting up "found cat" signs and see if anyone claims the animal. If none of this works and you aren't planning on caring for the animal, you might want to contact a shelter. Maybe they can hunt down the elusive owners for you.
Raised tail means nothing (my cat raises his tail when he rubs up against me, when I say his name, when he's feeling frisky and ready to play with his toys)... Big bushy expanded tail and raised back with hair standing up on it mean he's scared, angry, or both and you shouldn't approach him.

DON'T HURT IT! It's obviously someone's cat. You most likely have food or mice or something in your yard that it likes. Tails up is no big deal at all. Tail up means a happy cat. Now when it's ears lay flat on it's head, not a good sign. It's mad. Meowing, hm.... It might just be trying to find something or someone. (my cats meow all the time when i'm away on a trip) Maybe it was abandoned? Lost?

It sounds as if this may be a female cat in 'heat'.
She is seeking a like-minded male cat.
If she is looking for a mate she may wander but return to her home periodically. So, she may not really be 'lost'.
It also may be a male cat sensing a female cat that is in 'heat'.
Unless you have what she / he wants[ a male or female cat], there is nothing you can do.
PS To clarify all the confusing mis-information about the tail.......... The raised tail indicates a "whole" female.[ whole- capable of reproducing]

It could be a female cat who is in heat. Or it could be a male cat who has the scent of a female in heat. Loud meowing is not unusual in that scenario.
Is the tail straight up with the tip bent slightly? Usually that is a sign of being friendly. My cat would come running to me with her tail like that when she wanted to be petted or held. Since you're allergic you probably won't touch it but sometimes even if their tail is like that, they can become agitated if you try to pet them and might bite.

If you can get close enough, spray the cat with water, you may have to do it a couple of times, but it does not hurt the cat and it will end up staying away, normally just seeing the bottle after the first spray does it. Good Luck

Its mateing season again so that might be what you have going on. Ask around the neighborhood if anyone owns a cat matching the description and try to talk to them about the issue. Explain your allergies and they will probally understand your dilema.
If it really bugs you bad enough to do something squirt it with some water from the hose. Enough to get your point across that the cat isnt welcomed. Or if you feel its inhumane to do that I recomend some good ear plugs.

he is a male cat. he is roaming. and when he is lifting his tail... means he is spraying (sent marking) and it will smell. If you can... borrow someones pet dog for a few days... he will learn that there is a dog in the yard... and he wont come back. either that... (this one is kinda not nice) when he comes... spray him with a water bottle... OR throw water on him. Water dries... and he will know that will happen to him if he comes back. Other then that... Im not sure. Less you want to go as far as renting a live trap and buying cat food. you can catch him in the trap and turn him in to the shelter. maybe some one lost him.
