My 1 year old male cat has been pulling out big chunks of fur from his backside and tail. He has been treated for fleas and has not had any mats. There have not been any changes in the living situation, the only thing that has happened recently is my pregnancy. What can I do to help him?

hmm take him to the vets first off, and go from there. If they say nothing is wrong with him (like fleas, ticks etc) try switching is food? My dog was allergic to chicken and one day he started, then he'd always be itching himself and taking out tons of fur then we switched to lamb food and he never did that again. Pay more attention to the cat after work or being out and in bed, maybe he is bored?

You say you treated him for fleas? What did you use? If you used Frontline or Advantage you are good, anything else doesn't work. Other than that pulling hair out is usually a behavior problem, I had a cat that did the same thing. We ended up putting her on birth control pills and she was fine. You need to take him to the vet to make sure that there are no other skin conditions like ringworm, which can be transmitted to humans, or mange (which is rare in cats) but your vet can also prescribe something to help. Also cats can sense when something is changing, like pregnancy, and that is probably making him nervous. We see this more in cats with long hair. During this time you will want to buy some hairball medicine (in a tube) and give once a day. This Will not harm your cat to do everyday. But since he is ingesting so much hair he needs to be able to pass it.

Sounds almost like an allergy is making him itch and pulling the fur out, try a bath with dish detergent or baby shampoo, check for fleas and for mites( lil red things), also try a different flea control, he might be allergic to what is being used on him, check around the house for any chemicals that might have gotten spilled on him(bleach, cleaners, etc) if all else fails its time for a trip to the vet.......Thumper

Only time I have ever heard of this was when the cat had Allergies. Take him to the vet get him checked out, they dont do that for no reason. Im sure nothing fatal but still the kitty is uncomfortable for some reason. Good Luck with your baby!

My boyfriend's cat does this because the poor thing is hot. He has a himilayan, so it has a ton of fur, and during summer they have to give him a "lion cut." It looks stupid but he is SO damn happy afterwards.

If your cat doesn't have long hair it could be atopy, an allergy in cats: http://or.essortment.com/atopydiseaseca_rnsc.htm
If you notice any inflamed areas using topical aloe vera gel will help to moisturize skin and heal the areas caused by scratching. But please take him to the vet!!

Have you told your vet about it? My friend's cat did that and when they brought it to the vet they found out that the cat was pulling out its fur because it was stressed about something. Maybe something is causing your cat a lot of stress or anxiety...
