Hey,

My cat ate a 200mg ibuprofen tablet about 24 hours ago and she had been vomiting all day. She's very active and playful still but she will stop and puke randomly. I took her to the vet and the doctor told me it is a low dosage and not something that could kill her. She recommended that my cat stay overnight and receive fluid treatments... but it would cost me $700! As a newlywed, I really can't afford that so I had to decline. She doesn't seem to be vomiting anymore but I'm still nervous. What can I possibly do to help get the ibuprofen out of her system?

Hi. Well here's an update. She was acting fine after I took her home. An hour later, she just froze. She started panting heavily and was losing balance. falling over. I rushed her to an emergency clinic and they had to keep her overnight. They called me this morning to let me know that she is unrecoverable. Even if they tried to recover her, shes braindead. The worst part? The vet said its not Advil, they dont kno what it is

Most likely more food with fibers, however $700 is a small price to pay for a companion that you accepted responsibility for. If it were your newlywed, would you not spend the same amount?

If the vet said she would be okay then I would think she would be ok...

Just keep an eye on her and make sure she is eating and drinking as she usually does. Make sure she starts to become inactive and keep an eye out to see if she starts to vomit again..

The best advice I can give to you is if another animal eats a pill again. Get some peroxide and fill the cap up with it and make her drink it..If she doesnt..force it down her throat.

My mom's dog ate a morphine tablet once and we called the vet and that was what they suggested to do until we got a car to take her to the emergency clinic..She is now fine and happier than ever.

And $700 for that one night is WAY too much....I had a cat who broke its leg and he had to stay at the vets for a week and it only cost me about $300..

That is a lot of money, I love my cat more then anything, but i dont even have 700 dollars in my bank right now, so I see where you are coming from. If the vet said that, I would assume that the cat will be ok, but the vet wanted to give her fluids b/c she is throwing up so much she will be so dehidrated (SP? sorry) so if your kitty isnt drinking anything make her, get something and make her drink. She wont like it, but she isnt going to hold a gruge. If she is drinking and eating then she will be fine!

Well if you took her to the vet and they said she was going to be ok then I would go ahead and go with that. Considering there is nothing else you can really do. If they only "recommended" that she stay overnight then I am sure it wasn't something that was necessary for her to get better. just watch her closely and try to get her to eat and drink water. Other then that I don't think there is anything you can do to get it out of her system if the vet did not do anything.

Well, the doc said it shouldn't kill her. So just try to get her to drink a lot of water, I guess. The same you would do for a kid who drank Pinesol. Though, that will probably be really hard to do. She's not inactive or just sitting around yowling. I lost a cat due to antifreeze poisoning some years ago, and all he did was sit in one spot and growl and hiss at anyone who touched him. Broke my heart to have to put him to sleep, but he was suffering and you could tell. So I think your cat will be just fine. Good luck!

Vomiting is somewhat good I think. It's clearing out the stomach, getting all of that crap out of there before it can be fully digested... I wouldn't get worried until she started acting differently otherwise. Just watch food and water intake, make sure all that is still normal. And if it's still bad in the morning then take her back.

Best of luck!

the best thing to do is to just wait it out, the stuff is probably already out by now since the cat has stopped vomiting. Just give it plenty of water, because vomiting causes a loss of fluid.

Don't worry, your cat will be fine. The dosage is way to low to even damage to lining in the stomach. Just keep an eye on her for the next day or two.
