They, just like us, had to have faith in the comng Messiah. They knew he was coming, they just didn't know when.Christ the Messiah even showed up in the burning furnace with Shadrach,Mishach and Abednego. Those who live and died before the cross, waited for his first coming and we are behind the cross waiting for his second return. They looked forward to it and now we look back to it. All havng faith. That is why they did the burnt offerings and sacrifices because it was a forshadowing of the coming Messiah and a message that without the shedding of the future Messiah's blood there was no remission of sin. The faith they had in Christ is what saved them. The same faith we have in Christ saves us too. The only thing differant is that their sacrifices they had to do once a year or any other time was temporary. Jesus's is permanent. And the last one ever needed.

Jesus IS God. So your premise might need a little more complexity.

Here's what I mean:
6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy. (Psalm 45)

And this:
"You are my Son;
today I have become your Father"? Or again,
"I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son"? 6And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
"Let all God's angels worship him." (Hebrews 1)
compare that with this verse:
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, (Exodus 20)

Jesus IS God. It's just that God is more complex than saying, " God is one." It's a true statement that God is one, but it's more complex than that at the same time.

In the old testament, you had to have animal sacrificed to atone for your sin. Only could cover the sin. It too an unblemished animal to do this. Now we had the ultimate sacrifice by the Son of God, Christ.

They couldn't make it to "heaven" without Christ's Atonement any more than we can. They looked forward to The Atonement and we remember it.

For example, we take the sacrament (or Lord's Supper or Communion or whatever you term it) and in the OT they performed sacrifices. These sacrifices were "...a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, which is full of grace and truth."

The Atonement works forward and backward (its effect extends throughout all eternity).

I understand what you are asking and couldn't agree more. The answer is, we can reach God anytime we want to, without any help from another source. Because God/Goddess IS the Source! Blessings!
