I have absolutely NO idea of what I need to when it comes to taxes and stuff. I don't want to wait until they threaten to take me to jail in order to do something. How can I find out if I owe money or not?

Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. You will have to go through a series of prompts to get to a person and a transfer or two to get to the right person. You can ask them if any taxes are due and request a transcript of your account. If you have unfiled returns you an request the income documents for each year. Get a CPA or EA to do the returns for you. File them and IRS will likely work with you on a payment plan.

Well you either will owe taxes or be owed a refund. I would take the first step of gathering all your income data and going to a tax specialist to see what you owe or are owed. Maybe you will luck out and have nice refund coming to you. However, if you owe money the IRS will definitely tack on interest. It's probably better to straighten this out, because the IRS can go into your bank account or garnish your wages. You are in a better position if you try and negotiate something (either a payment plan (that is, if you owe) or a negotiated reduction as to what you owe). The longer you wait, the greater the problem.

If you have filed all of your returns every year, but just don't remember whether or not you owe them anything, you can call them and ask. If you owe them, sooner or later they will notify you anyway.

If you didn't file for some years, then make out the tax returns for those years and see what the total comes to.

Have a copy of the last tax return you filed and call 1-800-829-1040. They will ask you some questions, some may be from your last tax return, to verify you are who you say. If you owe them money, they will tell you.

You need to file a return for each tax year that you have income and/or withholdings. I think your first step is to find a local CPA/Tax Preparer and talk to them.

Oh, if the IRS does have income for you reported by someone, and you haven't filed a return, the IRS will let you know that. And they will also file a tax return for you (aren't they nice?), but it won't have any deductions that you might be entitled to. So please, talk to someone who has the time to explain it all to you (but be prepared to pay that someone for their time).

Well, I guarantee you will owe at least some taxes. You'll either have to go to a tax specialist that does taxes for you, and there are plenty around, or wait until tax season comes around again and start asking then.
