I had chest pain today and eventually went to the hospital. Other symptoms were pain in my upper lefthand back and more pain with movement. I did have a bit of sweating and a heavy feeling when I got up. Symptoms would increase when I exerted myself. They did the normal blood work and my D-dimer test showed a positive, somewhere in the middle is what the nurse said. I had a VQ scan that came back as a low possibility of clot in the lung, but it wasn't negative. Tomorrow I am having a ultrasound on my legs.

If they don't find anything, should they be doing anything else? I've read a little bit about it and it seems like there could a clot from somewhere else possibly, or even another underlying disease.

I can't imagine that this chest pain is just a fluke. This is not something that is common for me. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not on any medications at all. I was on the phone with my mother-in-law (a great conversation by the way) and was sorting mail at the same time when the symptoms started.

The doctor seemed very unconcerned that I had this problem since I'm only 39. My family history does have many heart and stroke problems, not in younger people however. I have been very in-active lately since I've been off work with a herniated disc. I had a similary pain, yet lessor pain, about nine months ago. I am a pilot by profession and I guess it is common for blood clots to occur. Other than that, I haven't had an incident like this before.

The VQ shows that pulmonary edema is unlikely, but the followup tests are very important.

DDimer is a possible indicator but is not in stone. Have the VQ or a Chest CT also venous dopplers. More follow up is needed. Always keep in mind that EVERYTHING they are looking for is bad. So be persistent in your follow up but no answer is sometimes a good answer.

Have heard of someone with similar symptoms and it turned out to be caused by the high blood pressure medication she was taking. Once she changed meds, she was fine.

Are you taking any medicines or anything unusual?

Also should check for gallbladder disease. Or injured chest muscles, which is something my husband had, and with symptoms like yours.
