Can you just go to like a courthouse or police station and get one?? Or do you have to have like a "connection"type of person? Or is there any place on-line I can get one...totally free??? Not one where it makes you think you're getting it free then BAM! you have to pay. lol.

You can get your own criminal background check by contacting your local state police, or state department of records.

You cannot get a background check on someone else that way -- though there are private firms that will hunt down people's records for you. But those private firms cost money, usually under $100 for up to a handful of states.

It depends on whether it's a criminal record check for yourself or for another person and what you need it for. If you need it for immigration purposes for yourself then you would get that from the FBI and it would be a federal check which covers every state (the FBI website explains the process). If you need one because of a job requirement or because you're applying for a professional license (such as a nurse) or because you would like to check your own record, you would want to contact your state's division of criminal justices services to request a criminal records check. There are fees involved with both of these requests including the cost of getting your fingerprints.
If you're looking into someone else's criminal background, the only choices that I know of besides hiring a P.I., is buying a check online and they are often not very accurate (so use a reputible one) or you can do certain searches yourself. For example, in NY state, you can look up (on-line) a person's name to see if they've served time in a NY state prison (not just overnight in jail or anythng like that).
Additionally, for info. on yourself, you may be able to go to a courthouse (in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred) or police station and ask for information but I don't believe that they issue criminal background checks.
Take care.

Yes. I once worked for a security guard business and went to the local police department to have a background check, finger prints, etc. to make sure I didn't have a criminal background. Actually, your employer might just have a contract service that does a background check for some sensitive positions (handling money, personal information, work in close contact with children or vulnerable adults, etc.). Probably costs $35 to $50 dollars depending on how extensive and how many agencies are check (local/state versus also checking with FBI).
