Oh my god! Can somebody tell me what to do? a few weeks ago my hamster has gotten a swelling/lump (i dont know which was it). i asked many ppl n they told me it might be a benign tumour as it doesnt grow. the lump/swelling actually felt like it can be popped..and it does not grow any bigger. so i think its not tumour? but 2day, i found out that the lump is 80% gone! i thought it might be a swelling after all. BUT i found out a BIG HOLE on the lump! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!? what am i suppose to do with it? my hamster is still as active as ever and i m still wondering if he actually has any sense of pain. OMG!! This is freaky..any1 can help? other than going 2 da vet cuz i'm financially unstable now..thanx!

Ok my rabbit had this one ,actually it was an infection under the skin,(could have started from a scratch) a pus bag if you will, it expanded under the skin till the skin couldnt stretch annymore and it popped like a pimple, nowwwww what u need to do is put antibiotic salve on it(without the hamster licking at it tho!, take a tube sock, cut out the toe and put it around his body, hopefully the infection did not travel to his blood stream, if it does it could kill him, it is advisable to see a vet tho...if the hole is too big and the skin too stretched it may never heal, a vet would have too cut off the expanded skin and stitch the rest shut, plus antibiotics the hamster would take internally , it's tough to own a pet and when it gets sick you cant do anything...try to call some local vets, sometimes they will work for a lower cost , or for free for lower income folks..gl and let me know how it turns out ok?.....Thumper

well, if it's got a hole in it, and has gone way down than it is an absess most likely.. it needs a vet to clean it out and keep it from getting an infection.. (most likely was an infection to start out with).. It cannot be left like that...animals very rarely show signs of pain, because in the wild that would be a sign of weakness.. would make them the first targets of predators..

I'd call around and get prices for it.. I can't imagine it's going to be too expensive if that IS in fact what is wrong with it.. If money is a problem then I'd start collecting pop/soda cans.. or see if a friend will help out..

I'm not going to say that you shouldn't have a pet because you don't have the money.. because I've been there.. I was stable when I got the pet, but things change.. and Hamsters are almost EASY to keep.. I had one for almost 5 years with not ONE health scare.. died peacefully in his sleep just after he hit 5.. but, I'd suggest that if you can't get it to a vet you bring it to a rescue.. or see if you can find a vet that will take payments.. Good Luck

If it was soft and not firm than it most likely was a cyst and not a tumor. It may have burst itself. Clean the wound out and then put some polysporin or other antibiotic cream on it to help it heal. Watch for infection and if this occurs head for the vet.
