Anything that makes people aware of the risks of breast cancer and the need to perform regular checks is a good thing.
Although I have a family history of breast cancer and do regular checks and routine mammograms etc, it was my partner during a sexual encounter who first noticed my lump!
I would love to see more of those t-shirts out there!

"going to second base" has traditionally meant letting a boy/man touch your breasts. Women with breast cancer often lose part or all of one or both breasts. If the rate of breast cancer goes down (it is currently very high, one in every seven women will get it), then there will be fewer mastectomies and more breasts, and lives, saved.
Breast cancer survivors appreciate the humor in the "saving second base" statement, and hope it raises awareness of how high the rate of breast cancer is and how it often requires drastic, physically altering surgery.

I have not seen 'saving 2nd base' shirts, but I love the
'Save the ta-tas' shirts I've seen!!!
I agree that humor counts, especially in such serious matters, and that anything that promotes awareness and conversation, and brings financial support to breast cancer research is a good thing.

*although I have a little trouble with the F____Cancer!! shirts.

I think second base is you breast. I guess saving second base....is saving you breast. Kinda crude but really makes you think!! How many people have now thought about breast cancer because of this question...I think the shirt did it's job, made you think about breast cancer.

i was looking for this topic..i just saw the t-shirt in newsweek.i think it's cute. it has two baseballs where your breasts would be/are and it says save 2nd base. yes, second base refers to breasts. i see how some would feel offended. i think it brings a little respite to an otherwise dark subject. i would love the shirt, however, i look terrible in tees and i don't think the baseball boobs are appropriate in my line of work. i work with children ages 5-12. and i would feel embarrassed if i had to explain it to them.

When I was a kid, 1st base was kissing, and 2nd base was feeling/caressing a girls breasts. That would be the connection. Saving the breasts so that someone could make it to 2nd base.
