Some people judge others by the kind of car they drive- but can you judge someone by the kind of guitar they play? If so, what are the "qualities" associated with different kinds of guitars? Thank you!

YES of course: A good guitar can be you life-time partner, but the good news is that you can have more than one to fit this description. It definitively starts with the looks, love starts at first sight, just like with a woman or a car, but then there's the test drive, when you play it for the first time and the feeling on your hands and body is as if it was made just for you. Time passes and you notice how the chemistry between that instrument and you spark tones and notes that are unique, and sometimes you actually think of your guitar while at work or traveling and seriously miss it. I have seven special guitars, each one of them are completely different, have their own personality, and I have named each one of them accordingly and engraved those names on the back of them. For example, a naughty flying V that I made some modifications including some DiMarzio X2N Plus p-ups I named her Natasha as she's like an 80's glam rock grupie, so naughty stuff is created when I play it. Meanwhile a yellow/white Stratocaster seems the "funny" girl type you are always pleased to talk to and listen to, so I named her Elaine after Seinfield's ex-Girlfriend who is that type of funny girl. So everytime I am invited to jam at a party, I select the guitar (and Amp) I want to take there depending both on the mood I am that day and the kind of audience/music combination that will be expecting us (She the guitar and me). I don't take my Nylon Electro Acoustic to the same place I would take my Custom Les Paul, or my Floyd Rose Equiped Ibanez, and so on.
Last word of advise, NEVER sell any of your guitars, I still have my very first one that I got when I was 13 years old, and still sounds awesome... perhaps better because I always re-string it one string at a time!
Good Luck and hope you find your "Loves of your Life"

Well the choice of which guitar a good player chooses is very personal. It cant BE judged. For example... my boyfriend has both a Strat and a Les Paul. Both are fine guitars. He likes the Strat. But the Les Paul is a part of him, like family, a dear friend whom he treats like a baby and of all his earthly posessions, the Les Paul would be the only thing he would risk life and limb to save in some kind of natural disaster ( I know cuz there was a tornado in our area and he left his house to seek safety next door at a resort, and guess what he had with him?) LOL

Guitars have different "personalities" -- each one sounds different and unique.

However, judging a person on the basis of what guitar they play, or what car they drive, or any other such superficial criteria, is just dumb.
