I have a parakeet, and it is acting rather oddly. It is puffed up and sort of panting. I believe its a female, and i also have a male. Could it be possible she is about to lay an egg, or is something wrong with her? Any ideas or experience with this would be greatly helpful. Thanks ahead of time.

Actually she sounds sick.

At the pet store they have some stuff (ornovite?) can't remember what it's called but you put it in the water and see if it helps.
It's okay if they both drink it.

It should be the only water source so you know she's drinking it.

Sounds like she has a respiratory problem going on.
You should always use bird vitamins in thier water, and avoid drafts, air conditioning, and smoking around them.

Also they should be covered (their cage) at night.

This is the breeding season and if you have her with a male, she is no doubt going to lay an egg. yes females pant when about to lay and egg. This a painful process. Do not give her a box, this promotes the egg laying process. The panting is the whole labor process as we know it to be. Just provide her with privacy and check on her tomorrow morning. If she has not laid the egg by the morning she will need to be seen by a vet to help her pass the egg. I could give you instructions to help her if you want to email me.

Do NOT add anything to her water, as it breeds bacteria to the water 20 mins after you add it to the water. Same with vitamins. Birds do not drink enough water for this to have any effect on them, Plus this will throw off any blood work if it's pulled by a vet to get acurate white blood counts and delay any treatment for the bird. To many people rely solely on pet store remedies which don't work and hinder and prolong treatments in the birds care, and this could be life or death of your bird.

You can place a heating pad on the outside of the cage and turn it on med and cover the cage to provide her with some heat. If she's caught a chill she will go near the heat, if she don't need it she will move away from it. This is a good sign if she moves away from the heating pad. Either way if an egg apears, do not remove it or provide a box for her. This could just be a calcium dump which is completely normal for this time of year.

Good Luck!

She could be moulting or is going to lay an egg. If she lays an egg and she is with a male you might want to provide her with a nest. There is probably nothing wrong.
