I answered this question before, but I have had my meds kick in, so I will get right to the heart of things. If he was the only one there, He was the Emperor for Life, the King, the Grand Pooh Bah of his world. He could not move up politically, so he had to build grander houses as megalomania took over his mind. Titles were no longer sufficient, he had to move on up.

i would say the first house was built out of necessity and he probably didn't do a very good job.

the second was because he thought he could do better and wanted to be more comfortable.

the third was because he knew he could do better and wanted to try it and see.

just my thoughts.

The first one was out of desperation. He had to build it to survive. The second one was an improvement on the first one. The third one was because it have given him a reason to live.

Because it doesn't say he was marooned alone. He probably had 3 wives and families.
