I am not a religious person, but I think that the exploitation of animals is reprehensible. Animals are sentient beings who can feel pain, and to hurt them is no different from perpetrating abuse upon a fellow human. To use dogs, particularly, as attack animals and to train them against their nature to fight each other are crimes besides being terribly cruel. I think that the basic problem of the Michael Vick/dog-fighting debacle is that people are far more interested in Michael Vick and his resulting predicament than they are concerned for the horror of what he has done to the dogs, which, to my thinking, is unforgivable. Michael is contrite only because he was caught and is convicted and will go to jail. Had the preceding not occurred, he would still be immersed in dog fighting. Another problem in the case is that the NFL and sports' media (ESPN) seem to view Michael's probable gambling upon the outcomes of the matches as the more serious offense when, in fact, the abuse of the dogs is the more horrific. And I do think that there should be stricter laws and punishments for the willful mistreatment of all animals. I applaud those who are working selflessly and tirelessly for the protection of our innocent pets and the nonhuman creatures with whom we share this planet. Thanks for asking!

Dogs and cats do not have to be taught to kill mice and other rodents. It is instinct. If you have an indoor cat who's never so much as smelled a mouse in its life, and the family hamster gets loose, the cat will kill the hamster without any outside assistance or encouragement. Personally, I'm not going to punish my dog for instinctively killing moles if it keeps them out of my yard. Animals were put here for man, not the other way around. While we are responsible for looking after the animals in our world, particularly domesticated ones, we don't have to rush out into oncoming traffic to save a squirrel's life.

My religion teaches that man is more important than animals...but that doesn't mean we have the right to abuse them.
I do think there should be stricter animal cruelty laws...but as long as animals are still considered mere property, that probably won't happen.

Animals fighting animals has been going on for a long time. An Ancient Chinese sport was cricket fighting. And you've probably heard of cockfights.
