.I always wondered the same thing. We are the 1st to fight and basically have it harder in every way you can think of yet we get the crap end of the stick always. But i love the corps and will always.

Im in the air force, and to be honest i wish the air force was more like the marines and the army. Some of the airman over here get away with murder and arent disciplined properly and they are too relaxed for the military.
But I think the marines is the way it is, because they are the few and the proud and need to be tough mentally and physically. I think the marines is treated the way they are, because they are most likely going to have it the worst when in combat, so they try and get them used to it so its faster for them to get acclimated when in tough conditions.
Ask any real air force member and they will tell you that there is a large majority of dirt bags that need to go back to basic or go to the marines or army and learn something

look this is the way it is just like anything in life certain things fit certain people no service member is any tougher than the next each branch has a specific duty which caters to a specific person there are people who hate whatever branch they went into and then there are people who will defend their branch by any means neccesary i am a soldier( U.S. Army ) and i love it to death , i have seen those that hate it to death when you speak of quality of life , marines dont have it any better or any worse than the army it is just different perspectives on situations at different times however the airforce is a bit relaxed in their duty and off time but me personally i love the army recon role , marines are sometimes the first to fight not always but the army occupies territory and it's occupants the navy controls the water and the airforce controls the air technically speaking the airforce are the first to fight and the airforce is the army lol just like the navy men are nothing but fat outta shape marines lol but seriously i respect all armed forces because we all are cannon fodder some just stand out more when we or they get expended, be proud that your a jarhead and make those days in the suck work for you HOOAH

I think the best way I had it explained to me was when I was in SOI, one of our instructors asked us if we knew why the marines had it so shitty compared to all other branches. Obviously no one had an answer, so he told us that the Marine Corps. likes to keep us in a state of constant of hate, discontent, and stress so that way when we go into combat, nothing will seem any different.
In all honesty though, it's because the Marine Corps. is the least funded branch of the military. It was very frustrating and discouraging sometimes going onto Navy and Airforce bases and seeing their hotel-like barracks' compared to the ones we had, then again like one user already stated, most guys didn't join the marines for a life of luxury.
I sure didn't, but still felt the same things you had expresses in your question and so did many of the other guys in my platoon.

Of the 4 branches the Marines are the smallest. When budgets are discussed they are a lower priority than the larger branches. They are at the bottom of the supply chain. I think the Corp prefers this because it makes a Marine tougher and allows them to develop a closer bond with there fellow Marines.

Don't know for sure. When I was a Hospital Corpsman with 2/9 in Okinawa the visiting team from HQMC asked Marines at Camp Hansen which of the two they wanted most: air conditioning or better training facilities. They picked the training facilities. My second tour at Camp Hansen with 3rd Medical Battalion I was the S-2/S-3 officer and wanted to get the drug-sniffing dog up from Camp Courtney for a walk-through in the barracks. We had some drug problems at the time. The MP officer told me that, because the barracks weren't air-conditioned, the dog could only work fifteen minutes in such an environment. He was telling me the barracks were fit for Marines, but not fit for a dog! LOL!

The Marine Corps has always been behind times when it comes to barracks and quality of life. Remember we are a part of the Navy. So we get our very small cut from their left overs. We get paid less then anyone in the DOD and DOT. We have priorities when it comes to our spending. Remember our philosophy is mission first comfort later.

Does the term "Spartan" come to mind? Just like the Spartans of old the Marines are "High speed and low drag!" When it comes time to move out the only thing heard is three words, "Aye, aye, sir!" No questions asked, none offered and all with one thought, get the job done!
Marines train their entire career for one thing kill and prevent being killed. You can't do that if you worry about scuffing up the woodwork or if some dog-robber is going to be handing you a chit for damaged property.
What do you do in chow halls? Get in, eat, and get out! What are you waiting for, the Cotillion to start? Or, maybe an after meal cigar? Right!
There are no niceties in the Marine Corps except on October 10, dress blues and Graduation Day.
I didn't have ANY problems with the way I was treated from 1957 through 1963. I volunteered for the job at hand and wasn't disappointed.

Politicians have to keep Marine Corp slim so that people would not complain about having to pay taxes to support a military force that starts wars without approval of We The people...Semper Fi

Marines are better than human beings..you were in the best fighting force there is. Who cares about joe blow PFC, he might be married, but his life isnt any better. Its no picnic being married to some of the wives around here and im sure he dreams of the days he had his barracks room.
And, trust me, when you finally do settle down and get married, your wife will be SOOO HAPPY you had to keep your s$%^t clean!

We train like we fight so we fight like we train. The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war. Take your pick. I think it is because we take pride in being able to do more with less. And field day serves a important purpose beyond keeping a clean room. It is a weekly inspection of gear and personnel. It can help you find out who has a problem with who and get a feel for the general tone and morale of your unit. We live together because we are a band of brothers. And if nothing else, we do what we are told because, well, we are Marines! And that's what we do, follow orders.
