A land mine is an explosive device designed to be buried in the ground in the expected path of an enemy army or armored vehicles. Each mine is loaded with high explosives and fitted with a detonator designed to be triggered by the weight, sound, or magnetic signature of persons or machinery passing over.
A marine mine is a similar device designed to be anchored in a shipping channel by a mechanism that keeps it floating just under the surface. The mine is loaded with high explosives and fitted with a detonator designed to be triggered by contact with a passing ship or by the ship's propellor noise or its magnetic signature.
The word "mine" has several other meanings, of which the most common is an opening or tunnel in the earth intended to give access to subterranean veins or seams of coal, gemstone-bearing soil, or metal ore.
You can find much more information about all of these meaning and their referents by doing an internet search on "coal mine," "iron mine," "gemstone mine," "land mine," "marine mine," or just "mine." Or "raw materials extraction."
A mute clown is a "mime," rather than a "mine."

There are deep mines for diamonds that go down thousands of feet, copper mines that are on the surface (after the overload is stripped off), and coal mines that go down hundreds of feet, for example. Which did you have in mind for your question? Each has a different approach to extraction and a different reason why you could be killed there.
