Cindy....have a large number of Mennonites here as well...

She may have been trying to add things up in her head and wasn't actually noticing you...or, you mistook an Amish lady for a Mennonite...The Amish are a good people, but, they are stricter in dress and belief and some are a bit offended by the styles women wear now days...especially if you had a tatoo or piercing anywhere but on your ears (well, actually there too) LOL she could have been Quaker too... Sometimes the only way I can figure out whom is whom is by whether they came by buggy or by tractor and trailer or by vehicle...or, when in a store, I look at their dress...Menonite's tend to be able to wear tennis shoes and store bought clothes, while the Amish and Quakers here tend to still do most of their own sewing yet. :)

Of course, it may be because some are not American born so they have a hard time with the English language...

Anyway, just be polite and respectful.... and you will do fine...Many are a serious people...especially if their husband is around...the men are sometimes rather harsh to the women if they think the woman was harboring a materialistic want....so, the women are often a bit different when the menfolk are around. Not all, but some.

Peace be with you :)

I don't know what is up with the Mennonites in your area, but this kind of behaviour is NOT typical. I live in an area that has both Amish and Mennonite, and for the most part, they are all very nice people. The rude or crass person who belong to these groups are the exception, not the rule.

The Mennonites from where I was were OK, but I have noticed that they act like they were picked on in some other places and I have run into some that act like they think everybody else in the world is a sinner.
I wonder how they get treated or what their church elders teach them where you are.
I have met with the same snotty attitude from some of the other Christian sects too.

Mennonites ? You have all kinds in every group. I once lost a supervisory job (Taught Living Skills and administered medications to the patients there). From allegations from a woman who was a Mennonite, simply because she was religious and I wasn't I was discharged. LATER it was found out this woman was taking "drugs" from the lock cabinet for "herself" where we kept the narcotics and was FIRED. I was called in by the administrator for an apology and she offered me my job back which I refused. I simply told her she was lucky I didn't file a discrimination lawsuit against them and walked out......

1. Mennonites
2. They might be a very strict group. Some Mennonites are absolutely lovely and others are caught up in a very small, legalistic way of thinking.

Mennonites? I have yet to run into a rude Mennonite, but I suppose there are rude people in every group. Ignore her, and move on with your life.

Mennonites? They're generally a very respectful and peaceful group of people. Maybe she gave you that look because you've been rude to her in the past.

They are Mennonites. I'm sure like all other kinds of people there are nice ones, shy ones, and probably mean ones. Her response may have had nothing to do with you, so don't take it personally.

There's a large Mennonite community here. I've never had a problem. One family runs a garage that I take my car to. They've always been very honest with me.

I've noticed that they aren't very friendly, but I've never had one be rude to me. I do know that they want to be "set apart" from the rest of the world, so maybe they don't feel comfortable socializing.
