We have an older (1995 or so) Sony TV. Recently it has been getting more vibration with bass. Today there was a power surge and boom, no sound. Is it toast?

If it has output jacks, try pluging the ones for sound, using an RCA type connector into the input of a stereo system or other audio amplifier device... If its just a speaker you will get your sound back thru the stereo....

The sound is toast. As long as the picture is good, you could still use the TV by either:

1. Use a VCR or DVD recorder as an external tuner and run the sound through a stereo or boom box (must have jacks for external source)

2. In Jan 08 the government will start giving away $40 off coupons to buy digital converter boxes. The boxes should be about $20 (after coupon) These include RCA jacks for external sound hook up which you could run through a stereo/boom box, plus you would receive digital channels on your old TV as well.

Well the sound amp is toast....the speaker MIGHT be bad too...I suspect $40 to $80 in parts, and about $85 to $150 in labor (30 inch TV or larger is $150) Trip can be $40 to $90 if they come to your home.

It IS toast.
A TV that old won't be worth fixing, or even diagnosed. Esp since it is not HD compliant.

Time for a new one, please don't waste the 120 bucks to put it on the repair man's bench.... head over to the store for a new one
