Quote #1 should read:

Nietzsche was striving for a new definition of "why," based on real life experiences of this life not some abstract concept of the afterlife or supernatural.

I think you need to relook at the first one as it doesn't even make grammatical sense. The second quote means that people who don't set long range goals for what they want from life, usually seek thrills to keep themselves going.
