I am considering having the bridesmaid dresses be the "wine" colored (deep purple) and someone told me they are going to clash with the pumpkin centerpieces. The bridal party is not going to be sitting all at the same table.....so does it really matter?

Actually, dark purple and pumpkin can look gorgeous together. It's a very dramatic color statement, but it's a personal favorite.
If you're worried, get a swatch of fabric or something in a color as close as you can find to the bridesmaids' dress as possible and hold it up near a pumpkin.
If you like it, you know it will add to the ocassion. If you hate it, you can decide whether to a) change either the dress or the centerpieces or b) not worry about it since, as you say, they won't all be sitting there next to the centerpieces all night.
Trust your eyes. If they're happy, then all is well. You can't please everyone with your color choices, so please yourself and your fiance. You're the two whose opinions matter most in this question.

It's your wedding, your decision. I think purples, deep violets, wines and even some reds and royal blues go great with golds, oranges and pumpkin colors. If it's really that big of a deal, and someone important is the one doing the whining (like a mother, grandmother or mother-in-law) consider adding a splash of something that's the color of the dress to the center pieces. Perhaps a sheer fabric draped and bunched with the centerpiece directly on top. If you don't want too much of that wine color, you could switch off. One table with wine colored fabric, one with gold, or orange, whichever goes better. Or if you really like the idea of the wine color being integrated into your centerpieces, do one table with sheer wine fabric and one with shiny rich wine fabric, etc. But I still stick to my first point when I say, it's your wedding, you decide.

The centerpieces matching the dresses doesn't matter AT ALL - what your bridesmaids will remember is the professional photos they'll have wearing a dress they loved. I wore a deep purple bridesmaid dress to my friends' wedding and I LOVED it - I mean - the alternative is purple pumpkins or orange dresses - ewwwww! My friend had an early fall wedding and she decorated straw hats with fall flowers that were like orange and yellow sunflowers and such. Yeah - if they guys have to wear matching cumberbunds and ties - they will definitely appreciate deep purple more than alot of the tacky colors you could pick - it's really the photos that are going to count when it's all said and done - the centerpieces and the reception are secondary.

Take a swatch of the bridesmaid fabric and hold it up to the centerpieces. Typically wine and pumpkin do clash though. But so much depends on distance and lighting.

Well, it is not a good idea, but the colors are your choice. Orange is a terrible color unless you compliment it with beige, greens, - your wine colored or deep purple bridesmaid dresses will be lovely but please do not use any orange on the dresses - or on the flowers that accompany the bridesmaids, use instead off white, or beige colors in flowers along with complimentary lighter wine colored flowers to stabilize the lovely wine color. Do not use orange candles or any other orange in the decorations, it would be over whelming and ruin the richness of wine (purple) color dresses. Try to tie in the more bland colors with a touch of win instead of any color of orange or red. You are aware I am sure that purple has red in it already so you are fighting when you put in any orange.

My friend got married last fall. I was her maid of honor, and we wore wine dresses as well (it's a beautiful color!) She also did pumpkin centerpieces with fall leaves on the tables, but she painted her pumpkins white with a little white iridescent glitter on them. That looked very nice, but I think plain orange pumpkins would look just fine with the wine color as well. As long as everything coordinates, and it does, because they are all fall colors, they definitely do not have to match!

Wine colored is generally considered to be a deep red or maroon, not a deep purple. Why not put some of the same color into the centerpieces..

The colors should be fine. Take a swatch of it and hold it close to the decor. Then depending also on lighting you will be able to make your decision. The colors for fall/autumn weddings are a vast array of deep reds, purples, oranges, golds and greens. Follow thru with the theme colors and add additional decor to the centerpieces to make your color theme obvious and work if it is a big concern.

Oh Oh, that color scheme really clashes. Sorry about that. I would reconsider the pumpkin center pieces, or if you insist on having pumpkins center pieces, then have the bridesmaids dresses either chocolate brown with sandlewood, or deep rust with beige, but not wine color.

No - doesn't matter one bit. Most people at a reception, especially bridesmaids, are in their seat for very long other than to eat quickly so they can get back to socializing and dancing.
Wine and pumpkins are symbols of autumn and I don't think they'd clash anyway...
