I have a cousin who greatly admires me. I'm 14, she's 10. We're completely different people, and whenever she's around I get sick of hearing about how her boyfriend broke up with her (ya, and I don't even have a boyfriend yet!), and how she just adores shopping. I don't even understand how she likes me, I don't care about my looks, and I barely shop at brand name stores! I don't mind that she looks up to me, it's just that she is always phoning wanting to hang out with me. Her parents leave her with her grandparents to look after (Her grandparents are basically her parents), and they can only do so much to keep her entertained! The thing is, that when I try to tell her I don't want to hang out with her, she wont take the hint! At first I tried to be subtle about it, telling her 'I'm going out with a friend.' But now, I just say I really don't want to and she still doesn't get it! I've even told her grandparents to get her to stop calling, but that hasn't worked either. Any suggestions?

The difference between 10 and 14 is light years. The hormones alone are enough to cause conflict.
This 10 year old has basically been abandoned by her family, and she doesn't have anyone else to look up to... you are the sister she needs right now.
She is putting on airs trying to seem more mature so she can hang out with you.
I would suggest very strongly that you bite the bullet and give the girl some of your time on the phone and maybe take her out someplace... the mall, the skating rink... whatever. Give her a chance to socialize. She needs company.
When school starts and she makes some friends in her own age group, that will probably take a lot of the pressure off you.
I've been there.

I feel sorry for her. She is a very lonely little girl. To get rid of her youre going to have to be mean and break her heart. I hope you can live with yourself.
