Lung cancer; tuberculosis; COPD (emphysema); pneumonia; spitting or coughing blood are symptoms of all these. However, a bad sinus infection can cause spitting blood. Also, if you have coughed or yelled a lot, it can cause a blood vessel to break and cause spitting of blood. Any lesions of the throat, lungs or esophagus can cause spitting of blood. Stomach ulcers can cause spitting blood. Coughing or spitting blood is a very serious symptom, and should be checked out by a doctor immediately.

when i took gingko biloba pills last semester to help my memory get better for exams and stuff, i coughed and spitted out blood on a daily basis. gingko biloba dilates the blood vessels in the brain, that is why i was spitting out blood. i knew it would happen but it was either get C's on exams or A's, and so i chose to sacrifice my temporary health for a few good grades. It went away when i stopped taking the pills. there are other medications which can cause a person to spit blood. also having tuberculosis, or stomach ulcers will cause that as wel.

Internal bleeding. Usually caused by severe physical trauma.

Occasionally, therefore, it occurs after being beat up like on tv, but in real life it is a really bad sign if a vehicle accident victim is coughing blood. Internal trauma, which generally causes coughing blood, is the most deadly part of a vehicle collision.

....I think it is also a symptom of tuberculosis, but you don't see that very often in the developed world.

RE:
What causes people to cough or spit blood?

The symptom of coughing up blood needs to be distinguished from the more general symptom of blood in sputum, where blood may come from other causes than coughing (e.g. nasal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc.). Both coughing blood or blood in sputum are potentially very serious symptoms that need prompt professional medical attention; Suddenly coughing blood or coughing large amounts of blood is a medical emergency. Tuberculosis generally causes people to spit up blood and chunks of their lung when they cough in it's late stages.
Also, if your lung is punctured by a bullet or whatever, you can cough out blood.
Same with your throat.

Sometimes it's something serious like Tuberculosis. But not always. My son had a virus over the weekend and started coughing up blood. We took him to the hospital and the doctor told us that sometimes when someone coughs or throws up a lot (which he did) they burst blood vessels in the throat. Disturbing to see, but not dangerous.

TB is a very rare disease. It really depends on the amount of blood. Small amount I would say irritation of the nasal passage, sinusitis, allergies, irritation of stomach lining ,, just lots of minor things you shouldnt be worried about.

Lots of lood would need proper diagnosis by physican.
