Yes it can hurt them. Actually over vaccinating with any of the vaccines can cause problems and certainly giving a vaccine more than once a year is over vaccinating. Cancer, auto-immune disease, allergies can all be caused by over vaccination.

Well, The short answer is simply.....yes it absolutely can. Specifically in smaller breeds. Some dogs have been known to develop generalized vaccine-induced ischemic dermatopathy or GVIID even when the rabies shot is administered once a year. I would not recommend a rabies shot more than once a year for any breed and certainly not for Miniature and Toy Poodle, Shih Tzu, Shetland Sheepdog, Lhasa Apso, Pomeranian, and Yorkshire Terriers. In fact, for these breeds I would consider a rabies shot every other year An overdose of the modified virus agent can cause skin lesions, lethargy, depression, and fever. Elevated liver enzymes and immune system issues can also result. Once diagnosed, treatment can be lengthy and expensive.

Always get as much information about the shots your dog is given from your vet so you can make an informed decision.

Most vets now recommend vaccinating on 3-year schedules after boosters at one year of age. Check with your vet for what they recommend based on the vaccinations they give. Some people are now titering their dogs immunity before vaccination to determine if vaccination is actually needed. However, most places require vaccination for rabies every 3 years by law and many boarding kennels, day cares, training schools will not accept titer results and require 3-year vaccinations. Also the bordatella vaccination is still an annual vaccination if you board your animal or regularly take your dog to group settings such as doggie day care. I don't recommend never vaccinating again after the first annual booster because several diseases, most notably parvo, develop new strains and the older vaccinations do not cover those strains. So its important to work with your vet, review the vaccinations your dog has had, titer if you feel necessary, and determine if previous vaccinations will cover new strains of old diseases. Oh and vets don't make money on vaccinations at all. They're a total loss-leader, which is why many vets do low cost vaccination clinics. The money's in surgery, folks. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: There is rabies in Florida where you live - any place there are skunks and bats, there is the potential for rabies. And parvo is worldwide - you just don't see dead dogs lying in the street, but plenty are dying. In fact the newest strain is out of Central America.

If your dog gets more than one rabies shot in a year every year of his life, then yes it will hurt him. However, if you are asking because you are not sure if your dog has had a rabies shot or not or because your dog has been bitten by a rabid animal, then it is safer to get the vaccine just to be safe even if your dog has already had one. Over vaccinating can cause several health problems, but giving the vaccine twice in one year once in a dog's life is not very likely to cause life-threatening complications. In the future, be sure to keep more accurate records so that you do not need to worry about revaccinating or over vaccinating again.

If you aren't sure whether or not your dog has had a Rabies vaccine before then take it to the Vet to get the vaccine right away. Although Rabies may seem like a disease that can never happen - it does. If your dog has already had a Rabies vaccine, it won't hurt them to have another one. It's better to make sure they are protected from the disease.

Yes. It is called over vaccination. Please do the research on vaccinations before you give them to your pet. Rabies vaccinations are good for 3 years according to most state laws. They really last longer, and currently are being tested by an independent research group to determine the actual longevity of the immunity.

I think that's a question you need to ask your vet. It depends on if it's a live or killed vaccine, and if it's a one year or three year vaccine. There's a lot of factors that come into play.

Overuse of vaccines is not good for the dog because of the contaminants in the vaccine. It won't kill them short-term, but it's just not good for them.
