Not all Orthodox women wear wigs. Also, there are many other types of head coverings other than the sheitel.

Yes, it's allowed to be made of real human hair.

The wearing of sheitels is actually under scrutiny in most Jewish communities now for the reasons you mention--they don't really complete modesty, and in fact can make women more vain. It is also thought that it doesn't really fulfill the mitzvah because the wig can easily be mistaken for the woman's real hair. So in a sense yes, it is playing with the law, in my opinion. But sheitels are falling out of fashion in many places to be replaced with snoods and the like.

I've often wondered the same thing. They have to cover their "real" hair with a wig (or other covering, I realise. But we're talking wigs now) and wigs usually are so good now, that they definitely look better than their own hair. How does that fulfill the halaka on modesty?

because of the fact wigs are heavy and can kill interior the summertime time. merely kidding. this is impractical once you may positioned on a hijab. The hijab, or the"heavy piece of black fabric like a tent" as you call it--isn't heavy in any respect. this is actual extremely easy, and covers my hair gracefully--in contrast to a wig. additionally, the full ingredient of the hijab is prepare modesty. A wig in basic terms serves the purpose of protecting one's hair, which has no longer something to do with wanting to be modest. And, it does not say everywhere is the Qu'ran that ladies could positioned on the hijab--that's a private determination. some decide on it as they locate it person-friendly to coach their modesty in this way...yet others locate that they are modest devoid of the hijab. of direction, in some Islamic countries, they make it a call for...yet's this is yet another tale.
