As her friend, you should place cupcakes at the end of the track, and tell her to run towards them

Maybe you should try and be a supportive friend. Maybe offer to run with her, so she can get practice in. If she has the stamina, there's no reason why she shouldn't run. Instead of asking whether or not she has a chance, help her work out so she has a better chance.

She has a chance, of course. It's not embarrasing to try to do something about being overweight. It's not like she'll win it right away, but she'll get much fitter. Will she last? Well, she'll probably slow down when she feels it's too much for her. We all have that instinct.

I was 5'8, 160 when I joined track.
After two months on the team I was 140.

If it's something she'd like to try to do, then I'd say that she should try it and see if she likes it.
