WE are having maple cabinets built by a cabinet maker. We are using a medium dark stain and think a little shiny coat on top will look better than flat finish. Builder says no, but how about you? Appliances are white with marble granite counters with a little of wood color in it and many more. This, granite is polished too. We are using backslash of 4X4 flat tile in light beige tones and a few 2X2 or 4X4 tiles of granite from counter embedded in backsplash. Only a few of them. This is flat except for little pieces of granite. Thank you

A shinier surface is always a little more flashy if the cabinets are being made I would also go with shinny finish. This finish is also easier to clean and wipe off verses a mat finish. Also if you walls and ceilings in this room are a satin or eggshell finish or even a mat the new cabinets will stand out nicely

You want your cabinets to look like part of the home's furnishings. Most wood furniture is not 'shiny' but has a glow if taken care of properly.
Appliances, granite are already shiny; backsplash and cabinets will look better in a matte finish. You will have to oil/polish them periodically.

The builder probably knows more about the ultimate finished product but in the end, they are your cabinets and you should get what you want. Have you considered a compromise between shiny and matte? How about a satin finish? Ask your builder what he thinks of that. Sounds like you will have a beautiful kitchen when you are done!

I vote for a matte finish because of all the various textures you have going in the backsplash and the counter. There is an understated richness of wood when it is not covered with a glossy finish.

It's a matter of personal taste, I think. Personally, I like a semi-matte look in my cabinets. They aren't real shiny but not dull looking either and lets the light bounce around. Also they are easier to wipe down and clean.
Good luck, whatever you choose will be right for you.

I'm with you. I think a little gloss would be better. It is a matter of taste of course. You should get what you will be happy with. Although the builder probably has see what looks good and what doesn't. Its all up to you. You have to live with it. Hope you enjoy your new cabinets.
