How you "defend" anything helps define you.
Your very question is an insight.
Why be defensive at all?
Be comfortable with yourself (and simply disengage when a discussion becomes more of a judgement than an education).

The first part that made answering your question so easy was the fact that you said important in society. I as a Christian could care less what society thinks of my beliefs. I will defend until the day that I die that Christ The Lord is the living God. I shall scream it from the roof tops if I am "left behind" during the rapture, and yes will be beheaded for it.
