Genesis is an account of the restoration that occurred after the Pleistocene / Holocene mass extinction of life about 12,000 years ago. Modern animals and plants in Genesis were made "after their kind," that is having a DNA structure similar to the prehistoric animals and plants. Man was also made similar in DNA structure to prehistoric man, but was also given the image of God, that is a spiritual nature.

What you are describing seems to be Gap Theory or something similar, which is both scripturally and scientifically shaky.

On the other hand, progressive creationism also resembles elements of your theory, but rejects evolution entirely. It holds that God has intervened throughout history to guide the process that scientists claim is evolutionary. The theory of punctuated equilibrium seems to lend credence to this concept of Creation.

First off, you are wrong to say that God set things in "autopilot". There are many things that occur randomly, chance events, that have a profound influence on the direction that evolution takes. One of the most drastic ones is the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Who's to say that this wasn't God's intervention? Such questions are beyond the scope of science to answer.

Now, as far as your actual question, there are a whole lot of ways that creationists interpret Genesis, in order to rationalize it in light of the age of the earth and of different fossils, while still rejecting evolution.

There's one huge flaw in your theory though. It's more than just a similarity that exists in our DNA. We have a lot of non-functional DNA that is the same as apes have--DNA that has no biological function, except to allow for DNA and paternity testing.

Either God has a strange sense of humor, or we descended from a common ancestor.
