What, no details? You want a really general answer, don't you?
First, you need a definition of both "respect" and "life." I like the idea the Native Americans have of apologizing to an animal when you kill it for food. It keeps people from taking those lives unnecessarily.
If we had no respect for life, we would live in a world of chaos. If we only had respect for human life, and not animal life, we would throw the ecology of the planet so out of balance that we would not survive long. But respect is not the same thing as refusing to kill under any circumstances, as mentioned above with regard to food. Respect has to do with the fittingness of a particular action. Is it appropriate to these circumstances?

There is no point. If your a evolutionist, then you follow the tree back to bacterium, and we always kill these. We are just more highly evolved from them, so, how cares about respecting life. On the other hand, if you believe you were divinely created, then there is a purpose for everyones life. Especially considering we were made in God's image

Our "lives" have become so hectic and the mind so encompassed, we never notice our own LIFE. Life is the mystery in you, in me, in all things. If we became more in touch with this LIFE that we posses, and let go of the story of the life placed over it, We honor, We Respect, We Love, We LIVE!

Because genes which make us respect life are more likely to get passed on to future generations, and thus proliferate in the population. It's straightforward evolution.

I think part of it is purely selfish. We're all alive and want to stay that way. However, some of it also comes from respect and love for our fellow human beings and empathy. I don't try to hurt people because I know how it feels to be hurt. I feel bad when people lose loved ones because I know how it feels. I think it mostly boils down to being empathetic with your fellow human beings.

Do we really? For example how many hundreds of thousands of people have died in Iraq? How many dogs and cats are euthanized at animal shelters? We seem to respect life when it is convenient.

Because if you don't respect others lives, how can you expect them to respect yours?

If society considers abortion to be OK, then many other humanitarian initiatives go out the window.
Protecting the unborn is a moral compass issue.
Right now the compass is broken unfortunately..

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

God created life.
God created man in his own image.
That's why human life is precious.
