I am 17 years old and about 7 months ago my doctor told me i was anemic and she was not sure why! I eat the right way and i don't have heavy periods! She has checked my blood several times over the past months and each time my hemoglobin level has gotten worse! And i feel a lot more tired then usual! She has also checked to see if there was blood in my stool but there was not! I am getting really scared now because i don't know what is going to happen next! What could be wrong.... what could be causing my anemia! I take a large amount of iron twice a day but it has not improved anything! WHat other types of tests do you think my doctor will do in order to solve my problem! My friends said she will probelly do a bone marrow biopsy to see if i have cancer....... is this true and do you really think that i could have cancer!!!!

Cancer is usually a very fast disease. If this has gone on for 7 months and your doctor hasn't diagnosed you yet than you need a new doctor and a second opinion.

There is no way that anyone here can tell you what is going on . . look at it this way . . even your doctor can't figure this out and she's examined you.

Ask for a second opinion and be persistent that you get a definitive diagnosis.

Don't panic- not until you know the answer. There can be several reasons why you can be anemic. You could have a iron disorder (despite taking iron daily). Depending on what you doctor suspects she may order a colonoscopy or egd to see if there is any bleeding in your digestive system- which can also cause anemia. Just remember- there are several types of anemia out there- Just complete all the test that the dr orders for you - that is the best way for you to help your dr. get to the bottom of what is causing your anemia.
Hope you have an answer soon! Good luck :)

Lots of things!

Yes, cancer is a possibility, but so are other things.

Anemia is a common disorder with a variety of causes, sometimes the underlying cause can't be found!

In the meantime, while your Dr is trying to find the cause, expect LOTS more blood tests.

You could have a problem that is preventing you from absorbing the iron. That is what happened to me. I am getting B12 shots now to help me absorb the iron and am doing much better. Don't let your friends scare you. It is probably something much less frightening than cancer.

Please don't come to that conclusion on your own.

The doctor will find out what it is, and treat you for it.
It could be a number of things other than cancer.
I have a friend who recently felt the same way, and was also afraid of what it was.She was finally diagnosed with crones disease, and is doing fine on her medication.

Take it one day at a time kid I am sure your fears will be put to rest.

Good luck to you, and God Bless.
