You should always have any new dogs health checked at the vet within 48 hours of bringing it home.
All 4 of my dogs are microchipped. It can be the only way they get home if they get lost as coloars and tags can come off, chips can;t
Trust me this little one will soon own a big place in your heart.

If he can provide records proving the health of the dog and that the dog has had all the shots, has had a fecal test to screen for internal parasites, is on flea control, etc., then no.
The way microchips work is the microchips are implanted under the skin with a needle like a shot. You would get a registration form to fill out and send into the company, there is a small yearly fee for their service. They would send you a tag for the dog. If the dog ever gets lost: shelters, pounds or vets would scan the dog for a chip, call the chip company and they would help them get the dog back to you.
Its not like "low-jack" or satellite positioning which is too bad, that would be cool.
A dog can be a great addition to the family and hopefully won't put a strain on your relationship.

A check-up is a good idea. Did your husband also bring home the shot records from the previous owner? If not, you have no idea if all the shots were done and at the appropriate time. You also need a valid rabies certificate for him.
I'm a fan of the microchip. If your dog gets lost and somehow ends up in any shelter, vets office, or research lab (if stolen - labs are required to check for chips), they will have a scanner and automatically know the dog belongs to you. Collars can get lost but chips are forever. Both my dogs and my cat are chipped.

You should take him to the vet just so the vet can have a once over and get the dog into their system. I think that micro chipping a dog is great. Collars and id tags can be lost, a microchip stays with the dog always. That being said, still get an id tag should someone other then a shelter or vet's office finds the dog in the scenario you guys get separated.

if u have the name of the person he got the dog from and what vet u should be able to get the records form that vet. double shoting a dog is not really good either.
but still its a good idea to take a new dog to the vet just for a check up. and worm check.
and the micro chip is a good idea or get a tattoo these are the best ways to find lost dogs....collars wear or break or slip.
even our small town has scanners at the shelter. many cops have them and vets. they are a very good idea!

I would definitely take him to the vet. Just because he's had his shots doesn't always mean he's healthy. If your husband still knows the people he got the dog from ask them for the paperwork for the shots because you don't want to give him double shots...or ask them what vet he went to...even ones in other states...your vet should be able to find them. Microchipping is a great idea because if he is ever lost or anything you can find him again very easily!

I would go to the vet for a general exam. Do you have a vaccination history on the dog? If not, your vet may vaccinate again just to be sure. And do you mean the microchip? Because I think microchipping is a good idea. If youre dog were to get loose and someone found it, shelters and vets can scan it for identification and get a hold of you. Good Luck!

Yes if i was you, i would take some time off to take him to the vet to see if there's any health problems, it's better to be safe than sorry. and as for the chip, i think it's a really good idea to get one just in case your dog gets lost and end up in the pound or anywhere else, they'll have a way to find out who the dog belongs to and contact the owner. =) The chip are usually free at the animal shelter, other pet stores charges ALOT....Try asking for their availability. Good luck

YES, 100% absolutely go to the vet.
In regard to the "CHIP" if it's a high end dog or a dog with some sort of great skill, like a hunting dog, I would get the chip or if you're in an area where dogs disappear maybe get it. For most of us though there's no need for the CHIP, IMO.

I was nervous about the chip at first too, but now my dog doesn't even notice it! Most of all YES. Do take the dog to the vet, you can never be too careful!
