Two separate breeds. One is recognized by the AKC (staffies) and the other (pits) are not.

Hey pasofinosweety. What are you saying here? I have two Pits and they both are great, FAMILY dogs. They are extremely smart, loyal, sweet, and are WONDERFUL with children. So tell me...how do Pit Bulls act???

Here we go again. Pit Bull is not a breed of dog. There are three breeds that are considered Pit Bulls.

1. The American Pit Bull Terrier. Not recognized by the AKC. Is recognized by the UKC.
2. The American Staffordshire Terrier. Recognized by the AKC, not sure about the UKC.
3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I think recognized by both the AKC and UKC, not sure.

Now for some interesting facts.
Remember the "Our Gang Comedies", later "The Little Rascals"? Petey was a Pit Bull. He had a dual registration. He was registered with the AKC as an American Staffordrshire Terrier. He was also registered with the UKC as an American Pit Bull Terrier.

This leaves a pretty gray line as to what a Pit Bull really is.

I really don't care. I have two APBTs and they are the greatest dogs ever.

Once again, the ignorant speak. Most people cannot tell the difference between the 2. I think it depends on the breeder, but ask alot of animal experts and they will tell you that the difference between the two are the names. Pit Bulls are recognized by the AKC as APBT (american pit bull terriers) as are AST and ABT.

As far as I know, it is a mix of old english bull dog and black and tan terrier (both of which are extinct). They were brought to the US and bread with bigger dogs to get the pit bull. I love the pit (owned 2) but the personality is nothing like the staffie.

Since "pit bull" isn't a recognized breed in the AKC, no. They are often mistaken for pit bulls, though.
