swap it out for a turbo 2.3 motor from a 84-88 Thunderbird turbo coupe or Mustang SVO, they make anywhere from 155-205 hp stock depending on the model. Easy to hop up with lots on online help. Lots of engine and used parts on Ebay.com

Serouisly the 2.3 is a good dependable engine but it is not a performance engine and if that is what you want you gotta swap it out for a 302. It is not that big of a deal, all the mounts line up to the frame and all that. Some differences in computers and linkage for sure but if you find and wreaked 5.0 'stang and just swap all the parts over it will be dead simple! Good luck!

try finding a ford SVO performance catalog from 1990. they did make a turbocharger for the 2.3 in 1989, which i'm pretty sure is the same engine. not sure if you could find one now. try to find a cold air kit. take the catalytic conveter off and put on a performance muffler.(make sure it will pass inspection without the cat. converter). computer chip. chamge ignition system.
try looking online at brothers performance. not sure if they have a lot for 4 cylinders though.

Another vote for dropping in a V8. Maybe a bit more of a project than your willing to undertake, but fining turbo parts for it may be a bit of a challenge as well. The benefit of swapping it to the V8 is that it will still have the 4 banger vin#
