Every child is different, and these are questions all parents must face. While I think it's a good idea to begin to give your 12-year old some more independence, I think this is still too young. What good could come from a child this age being at the mall at this late hour?

If he is responsible and follows household and schools rules consistently, uses good judgement, and behaves respectfully, it might be appropriate to be at the mall for a couple hours in the daytime, like on a Saturday afternoon.

There really is no reason why a 121/2 year old should go to the mall at those hours. Alot of malls these days don't allow unattended children. Much older teens will be there at those hours. I am sure you havee discussed all the different things that can happen and your son is a good boy, but bad things can happen to good children. Let him invite his friends to your house and provide them a space where they can hav e privacy and feel grow-up. He's just trying to stretch his legs and grow.
P.S. if his friends do come over set some ground rules and then let him have his time.

yes that is to late cause he's not even a teen yet. you should push that time backto like 6:30 to 8:30. Then when he does turn 13 you can increase a little more he'll probly fight you in the begin but when he turn's 13 and you increase he'll love you even more.

anyway unless you live 5mins from the mall 10:00 is to late

It depends what day it is, saturday night would be ok, a twelve and a half year old should be accompanied by an adult or a friend, but 8:30 on a school night is way too late.

I think those are fine times for Friday and Saturday but not on the school days. I think 9:00pm is late enough for a 12 year old on school nights.

Well i'm 13 and my parents let me walk the streets until midnight which is much more dangerous than being in a mall. Only one thing my parents make me do is ring them every hour to check i'm safe. Maybe if your really worried say every half hour but no it's not to late because he's with friends theres other people in the mall. LET HIM. I'm saying this, if you don't he will think you don't trust you and will resent you more than anything and have worst behavior.
Believe me thats what i do so i know.

Depends on who he is with, the area you live in, how he will be getting to and from the mall, does he have a cell phone? Ask yourself these questions then use your best judgment. When I was 12 I used to hang out at the mall at night, but I had two older brothers with me. Hope this helps :-}

Definitely!
That is the time that mall rats hang out. More and more malls are closing their doors to teens and kids not accompnaied by a parent after @8pm because these kids are so disruptive and chase the real customers away.

I would say yes, I would say for a 12 yearold in the summer area with long sun, try 8:30/9pm 12 hours outside is quite a long time anything could happen in that time especially in a mall, anyway good luck with what ever action you take.

It seems like the weirdies start to hang out at night, so what ever you choose make sure you have some way to get a hold of him, like let him borrow your cell phone or something. Also a good idea is to make is so he has to be home by 9 instead, just let him go earlier so he will get the same about of time there. Good luck!
